Reverse up hill, grinding/rubbing noise - clutch slipping?
Good afternoon all, hope everyone is well 👍 I've noticed a bit of a grinding/rubbing noise when underload in reverse (up a gradient, or when trying to back up and onto a kerb etc etc) and I thought I'd ask the boys and girls in the know before i start worrying about it too much ☺️ All gears work fin...

Re: Rad fan comes on, God awful smell
I was afraid that may be the case, "Balls".
If anyone knows of a decent, trustworthy garage not to far from Brighton that would be a great help

Re: Rad fan comes on, God awful smell
Was having a sniff around the engine before setting off this morning and the smell is still lingering, pulled the flywheel inspection plug whilst digging around and the smell is matches that from the plug (but much stronger) This has to be gearbox oil, right? Also, the bit circled here https://i.img...

Re: Rad fan comes on, God awful smell
Bit of additional info, I've been under the van this evening, and I'm almost certain that it's gearbox oil. I've given it a good clean so I can hopefully see where it's coming from, but there is oil of some description collecting on the rear most exhaust bracket https://i.imgur.com/ZbnhwWS.jpg And t...

Re: Rad fan comes on, God awful smell
Single speed fan, don't know if that makes a difference? Where would the resistor live so I can check it anyway? With you saying that though, does this sound plausible; the fan is blowing stinky gearbox oil air forward into the cab? There is a definite leak around the area which has the faint, but d...

Re: Rad fan comes on, God awful smell
Not upset anyone that I know of 🤣 I'll check the battery area and report back. It was strange, almost immediately after the fan came on (like I say, never heard it work before) we were blessed in the cab with a decaying smell. Is it possible.... That the fan kicked in as we were stationary and blast...

Rad fan comes on, God awful smell
Hello all! Another day another question.... I was stuck in traffic on the way home today, and when my rad fan kicked in (first time since owning it, so it works after all!!) The most god awful smell appeared. It came and went, and is still lingering around the van and in the engine bay no I've pulle...

Re: Electrical? Mechanical? Overheating no fan, no idea
Hmmm, so I'm still none the wiser 😂 I don't suppose anyone knows which wire, or trace connection on the flexy ribbon PCB behind the cluster is the led feed so I can test for a signal? The temp gauge led is controlled by a circuit in the gauge itself. The circuit can be triggered by earth faults ...

Re: Electrical? Mechanical? Overheating no fan, no idea
Update! So, I started with the easy bits... pulling the plug on the level sensor seems to do nothing, so I pulled the connector off the temp sensor and bridged the connection, sure enough straight round to hot, but still no led. *As a side note, the sensor was only "thumb" tight? And as I ...

Re: Electrical? Mechanical? Overheating no fan, no idea
Being an early water-cooled engine, there is less to check. 1 - There is the coolant temperature sensor on the engine / thermostat. 2 - Fluid level switch in the main tank, not the expansion tank. 3 - The sensor loom connectors in the engine bay junction box. 4 - And the coolant level / warning lig...

Re: Electrical? Mechanical? Overheating no fan, no idea
it’s normal for it to not come on until the gauge is at least 3/4 of the way over . Infact it’s unusual for the rad fan to come on at all in the U.K. from October to May under normal driving conditions This is solid gold info. Thanks mate 👍 I'll run through the tests you mention and see where it goes

Re: Electrical? Mechanical? Overheating no fan, no idea
Thanks guys, yup I need to get it working, but I have no clue where to start or how to do that. I took the dash pod off the other day when doing the slave cylinder and bleeding the clutch and had a close look at the back of the cluster, checked connections were sound and in tact and everything looke...
