Cheers Ben Thanks for that. Yes that would be an option. The filler neck certainly needs replacing which will need the tank dropping out I would think. I will then get them to inpect the tank. Might be more cost effective to replace that as well rather then 3 hours labour cleaning a 27 year old tank...

They assure me it's the metal filler neck as well between the rubber and the tank.

I'm getting quotes on full replacement or replace filler neck and drain tank (which could push up the labour). I will post when I get the call.

thanks

Ok, just got back. Yep, they are telling me the poor running and HC emissions failure is due to water ingress into the petrol tank through the filler neck. Apperently water can run down the van sides and in through the area around the petrol cap. The filler neck is perished and a tank that has had w...

Filler neck rubber or if its a steel filler tube then you are in a spot.. the steel ones are not available and so the tank has to be changed apparently... If the tank is ok and the filler tube ok, just the rubbers and hoses need changing.. change the fuel filter too.. Oil and filter change and use ...

Just a thought.

I am also toying with getting the van gassed so if this is the genuine problem would I be better off just replacing the filler neck (to prevent any further water contamination) and putting the tank money towards the conversion??

MOT Failure on Emissions/Water in Fuel

Hi All Just popped the van in today for its annual MOT and as well as a few minor things it failed on hydrocarbon emissions. The engine was running a little rough but this was I thought due to the tappets having drained of oil and the van having been laid up for the Winter. The van made a steady imp...

No problems so far.

I just made sure that as well as making some rubber feet to stop any leakage I also used 1 inch+ washers on both inside & outside to help spread the load which for that matter is only as tight as you pull the straps.

Let me know if you need any help.

Congrats Toomanytoys :D I would appear to have been the idle stablising unit. I mananged to cover 30+ miles over the weekend without the problem occuring. I will now leave the thing disconected as you rocommend. What task does it actually perform apart from the obvious name in the title. I would be ...

I've got a Devon moonraker pop top and I've put a couple of hooks about 24 inches apart just to the rear of the skylight. I run a strap through these and around the boards to hold the boards down at the back. At the front I run a longer strap through the open doors and over the top to hold the front...

Yep, I've renewed the fuel filter.

The wires in the coil/left carb area are a bit crudy but not sure of the function of the bypass valves to be honest. Something intermitent would suggest something lose maybe? But would that prevent fuel to the carb? :?

I'm in South Gloucestershire/North Bristol

As I mentioned I can't seem to recreate the problem on my driveway. Ticks over perfectly and does not misfire at high revs. It only seems to happen when I'm out on the road. :(

Yes, I'm more inclined to think it's lack of fuel in one of the carbs rather than an ignition thing.

As I mentioned turning the ignition off and re starting the van seems to temporaraly cure it. Does anyone know how I can check if these valves are working correctly?

Thanks again.

Thanks

I will give that a go. I didn't realise it could affect the van while actually driving and not idling.

I'm really just trying to try all the obvious and inexpensive things before I start taking the carbs apart.
