There's a lot of things you could do before swapping to a 2.1 air cooled! I'm sure there's someone, somewhere who could rebuild this fuel pump - there's still hundreds of thousands of vehicles around the world using that type of pump, surely there will be a company making knockoff parts, at least. ...

Took my lid off and as mine was off to one side took some grinder sparks from what i was working on, ignited and burned, didnt smoulder at all

so yeah id change it with a fireproof solution

That engine will shred the DW, its the early fine tooth gearbox, had one on a EJ22 in a Microbus with fat tyres and it somehow survived.
