Re: Old leisure battery wiring

Brown wires are ground of Vw's. Must have been wired to BS AU7 standard where brown is a direct live feed. Cause a *** confusion- Mongrels language. Run new Red wire alongside. The relay was available from Aes, Automotive Electrical Supplies and the website has the connection details.

Re: Low ignition voltage

As far as I know there's only a single main feed wire from the battery or starter solenoid 30 terminal. Overtime this can become somewhat inadequate and it was a known problem on older VW's. Run other cable alongside the first connecting to the terminals designated H/30 on the fusebox/relay plate. O...

Re: T25/T3 leisure circuit and ZIG unit.

Following the diagram given in another reply, with one amendment that is taking the fridge relay supply wire directly to the battery instead of the Zig unit. Probably done if the Zig has an extra 15A fuse but due to extra wire length needed would wire up using a line fuse instead for a more direct w...

Re: Zig cf8 makes clicking noise

Thermoswitch clicks because of overload. The components downline are available from Farnell. Could upgrade zener diode to a 50W type and the rectifier to a 25 amp type. Capacitor could be upgraded to 2200uF 50v or 63v 105°C type. If this capacitor is swollen and shows brown stuff(the electrolyte) it...

Re: Brakes going weird

Pointer to major failure on master/slave cylinder seals or hoses. Do a corner by corner check at each wheel with a torchlight. See if backplates are showing wetness on rear wheels and inside drums if fitted with such. Disc brakes are easier with wheel removed. See for similar signs as with the drum ...

Re: Starter Motor wiring

A Haynes Manual will help. On the wiring diagram there maybe single point joints marked with a T suffix. These maybe be behind the fusebox and kick panels in the cab/around under dashboard area. Would also check the wiring loom condition around floor entry and underside of van. I don't know if there...

Re: Jump lead doubts

Also make sure you unplug the split charging relay whilst jump starting. Think reliable battery life can be short as 3 to 5 years.

Re: Fixed - Leisure Batteries Dropping Voltage Causing Split Charge Solenoid to Disengage

Alloys used nowadays are notorious for corrosion. Not sure if Japanned (black) finish and the gold cadmium plated bolts are both the worst. Replacement with bright zinc/nickel plate seems to be in order.

Re: Split charge upgrade to CF8 zig

Furthermore all mains installations in caravans Must now be RCCB/RCD protected and now wired in artic grade flexible cable given to the Ammendments updates to 2007 IEE Wiring Regulations. Usually flexible conduit and mini-trunking for extra cable protection can be used , but a snag here could be the...

Re: Battery or Alternator trouble?

A point to make about Varient derived engine Bays is that the alternator output wire is maybe too thin. This might have been done to get itself through the 2 large grommets, one in the back of the alternator, the other on the right hand cylinder bank tinware, where the whole loom passage is tight. A...

Re: I messed something up - Can't use Leisure battery.

Check out the wire from the battery to the Zig unit for any shorts to ground. The open wire fuse is known as a Continental Fuse and come in 4 ratings. Yellow 5 amp, White 8 amp, Red/Brown 16 amp, Blue 25 amp. These are Continuous Ratings and use of the blue fuses maybe taking things too high as the ...

Re: Odd relay problem

Could point out a symptom with the wiring loom chafing on somewhere. Could strip the steering columb of its panels and check around the fusebox/relay plate. Have to check individual wires/loom for signs. The fusebox would click if it was removed without first disconnection of the battery -so not adv...

Re: Switch lights on, engine cuts out

When turning the engine over, the X circuit is temporary cutout by the ignition switch. Pre 84 models using the older continental fuses only had one 16 amp relay fed circuit at fuse 10. As said in other replies the headlamps are also fed directly by the X circuit. The 68 onwards Bay models also had ...
