Re: AAZ turbo clearance + vgt?

I did think of welding it back on and adding gussets, but since I don't really have a clue how metal fatigue etc works and my welder probably can't handle 8mm I thought this was a safer option. I didn't think about the nyloc! Its now done 300 miles and had a peek yesterday when the engine was hot. S...

Re: AAZ turbo clearance + vgt?

Here's the condition once I got it out: https://i.imgur.com/3sR7fMH.jpeg bottom left chewed up, bottom right snapped, top left no bolt, and top right bent. All made of 8mm steel and weighs a ton. Assuming it went in at the same time as the engine it's only done 18k miles Picked up a JX bracket in Sh...

Re: AAZ turbo clearance + vgt?

Similar but not quite, it's 3 bits of box section welded together with flat plates on the end for the block. The top left one wasn't even offset so it's only ever had 3 bolts.

Re: Tailgate lower seam construction

Finished this a few weeks ago before a trip down to Wales. 1.5mm sheet (WAY too thick and hard to bend) for the inner and outer, wrapped round, tacked in place and with plenty of drain holes drilled. There's a tiny lip about 10mm above the bottom of the original tailgate which I thought would be too...

AAZ turbo clearance + vgt?

The custom engine mount bracket on my AAZ fitted by previous owner is looking worse for wear so I was planning on fitting an original JX bracket. I've got the AAZ 3 bolt manifold (028 253 033 R) but the turbo is a garrett t15 which it seems was never fitted to these and the wastegate actuator c...

Re: Tailgate lower seam construction

Thanks, I thought that could be the case. My fold doesn't lie as flat as the factory one so I'd have gaps. I'm tempted to put a small weld along that edge but is that asking for a load of warp?

Re: AAZ injector refresh

Some scrubbing and a modified screwdriver did the job. 4 siezed Injectors and 2 disintegrated glowplugs as a result! All sorted now. Thanks for the tips!

Tailgate lower seam construction

The bottom couple of inches of my tailgate is rusted to death so I've chopped it. eg: https://i.imgur.com/Ca9QMlz.jpeg I'm making the new panels myself. The outer skin is wrapped round the inner skin at the edges, giving you 3 layers of metal, but I can't work out how they are attached together. The...

AAZ injector refresh

I've been trying to get my AAZ running and starting a bit smoother and since 3/4 of my injectors had green waxy gunk seeping out I thought I'd pop them out and see what I can find. Injectors all came out fine. There isn't anything obvious wrong with nozzles 1-3 (I know that doesn't mean much) but no...

Re: Cold start cable routing

Luckily just spotted a 3l Subaru build thread which shows the handle is actually on the left of the wheel I'm often staying at altitude in the UK so I have had to start a few degrees below 0 in winter. Will be heading off for a year in Europe in the next few weeks and I don't know where or when I wi...

Cold start cable routing

The fuel pump on my AAZ fitted by previous owner has a cold start lever but it has never been hooked up. I've got all the parts but it's not obvious where I should route the cable at the front. Is the handle usually fitted to the right of the steering wheel? (RHD) Should there be holes for the cable...

Re: Diesel filter recommendation

While the fuel tank is out I'm also replacing my snapped handbrake cable, welding up a couple of holes in the floor and extending the air duct that comes out of the floor behind the front seats to later add a diesel heater. Is there anything else I should be doing while the tank is out of the way?

Diesel filter recommendation

I've dropped my fuel tank to replace some of the seals and hose and am working on the rest of the fuel lines whilst I have the opportunity. Here's the current layout: https://i.imgur.com/Wstz9XT.jpg There seems to be excess fuel line looped around in the engine bay and the current fuel filter is a s...
