Re: Bigger alternator For CU engine, rob a golf?

Fiddly in that you have to dismantle the fan/pulley off the shaft - might need a puller. Then hope you can get the long bolts out that hold the main casing together, then hope the bearing will slide off the shaft over any corrosion, then hope the air cooled casing does actually fit exactly the same ...

Re: Bigger alternator For CU engine, rob a golf?

Some aircooleds were fitted with a 65amp alt anyway - just try and get hold of one of them. The sticker is blue rather than green on the 40 ampers as far as I recall. I might still have a spare somewhere if you wanted to try it...

Re: Tyres - how old is too old??

Just found a bit more on wikipedia under tire: Dangers of aged tires Research and tests show that as tires age, they begin to dry out and become potentially dangerous, even if unused. Aged tires may appear to have similar properties to newly manufactured tires; however once the vehicle is traveling ...

Re: Bigger alternator For CU engine, rob a golf?

Yes I did this but you will need to swap part of the alloy casting over to accommodate the mounting for the extra pulley mounted fan. Fiddly but basic engineering...

Tyres - how old is too old??

The spare on my van is a brand new Kleber and looks in perfect condition, not cracked or perished and never been left in the sunlight. But the date code shows it was made in 2000. There seems to be some range of opinion on the net over how long tyres last - some say 5 or 6 years, Michelin say 10 is ...

Re: engine not starting 2litre Aircooled

That hose connects to the steel balance pipe behind the airbox. There's a rundown on the vac hoses in the wiki.

Re: Large air hose to right of air intake unit???

It's just for fresh cool air to be supplied from the side of the engine compartment under the intake grill. Not that important, some people leave them off with no ill effect so I understand. Most are split along the corrugations, mine certainly was. You might get a better one from a breakers but oth...

Voltage regulator on alternator

I'm trying to help a friend out who has just bought a JX engined camper. The battery is draining fast when parked and an ammeter in series with the battery shows a drain of around 3.5 amps or so with nothing switched on. I tried the take the fuses out one at a time test but nothing changed. Then I s...

Re: Anyone in Lancaster?

Hi Sarah Let me know if no one else can do it - I might be able to help. It's about 27 miles from home, 20 from work. Depends when/whether I could hook up with the seller, ideally in daylight, really. Was there anything you wanted looking out for? I've not had a Westy but did have a 2 litre a/c camp...

It doesn't make it warm up quicker! It just moves the warm air up front better once it is warm - there's a fair bit of metal for the exhaust to heat up before the exchangers can do their bit. All you can do is start it up and let it run for a few mins (and get your van nicked!)
