Is it an aftermarket rev counter? Does it have a switch to change from 4-6-8 cylinders?

Did you take brake calipers off?  Could be as simple as caliper bolts not tight enough. Had this on a friends bus. He could'nt find the source of the knocking. Mine is an August 1983 and does have the light. 
Maybe its  because its a Caravelle?

As above. I have mk2 golf lights with nightbreakers fitted.

Similar wheels on my bus, I have 205/60-16 tyres all round.

Had to remove a small amount of insulation directly above the carb. Other than that it was a straight fit.
