Did you replace each HT lead one by one or did you pull them all off and then put them back on?

You may have got the firing order wrong, possibly.

If the bearings in the starters have gone then you may not get a perfect mesh on the flywheel or ring gear, which could give you the grawnching noise.

Got a GL myself, like driving from your armchair. Had the box rebuilt at a place near Charlton, just before crimbo, £500 plus vat.
