I've only ever fitted flaps with the engine out, by removing the fan housing, so not sure what you can get to with the motor still in situ?

Yep that would be the one.
if you remove the tinware under the right hand cylinders so you can see the pushrod tubes you can access the thermostat from there, no need to strip tinware from the top half

Aircooled - CUengine - exhaust studs?

Hi
I'm trying to locate a set of studs (the ones that hold the heat exchanger to the head) the original ones are m9 in the head and m8 at the other end.
Vw dealers dont want to know, gsf only do m10 - m8 studs & i dont really want to tap out the heads.
Any ideas who sells these studs?
