Check the wiki.

There are lots of bushes in there which do wear out. It's not too dear to replace them, but when you've got 8' of complex linkage there are going to be wearing parts!

You're a bit late with that, Mark. I've already been rude about it elsewhere on here.

Best place to start is at one of those on-line part-finder sites. Or just hunt down a Seat Toledo turbo diesel (or even a TDI motor, if you can cope with the sparks) - usually a damned sight cheaper than a Golf of any form. All it is is a Golf in a cheap suit, too. Mark S, you should come up to Fil...

No offence, but this was first published in July 2003 here and we should probably attribute the source correctly as the New York Times, just in case the copyright owner looks in on us.

It's an old vehicle. It's gonna cost money.

Try to bear in mind that most Fnord Transpits of the age of these vans are long since in the scrappy. Kinda puts a different perspective on the ownership proposition, doesn't it?

he recommends rotating wheels every 5000km As do all those who 'know' Syncros.# If your fifth wheel is included in your rotation then you should only need one spare as it will be worn the same as the other four wheels. When considering the price of the spare wheel carriers try to bear in mind they ...

You should swap out your temperature sensors on the engine before inserting a manual switch and get the engine tested for compression and leakdown, otherwise you're likely to be attacking the symptons, not the cause.

Go to GSF or EuroCarParts for a pattern exhaust that will last a little while, or JP Exhausts (contact details elsewhere on here) who will sort you out with a complete stainless system for less than VW are quoting. What age is the van? Bear in mind an early system will cost you about 10% power, as o...

Some vans had the spare under the van at the front, others had a solid bash plate there and either had the spare under the rear seat (in a doka) or had a bolt-up point at the back of the van (in a Caravelle). Either way your new wheels ain't gonna fit in either location, so you will have to look at ...

Swap the 1Z inlet for the 1.7D manifold and 'port' the 1.7 manifold to suit the 1Y engine.

I've done this conversion. There's rather a lot more than the sump to swap. The intercooler will fit in the rear quarter, with a motorbike cooling fan over it. Personally I wouldn't bother doing this conversion again. The 1.6 diesel engines have a nasty habit of cracking their heads between the valv...
