Re: Another rebuild already??

I’ve read that the amc valves aren’t great and that they should be swapped for original VW ones?

What problems could arise?

And if I go in and replace the seals + fire rings on both heads, are there any other jobs I should do at the same time?

Re: Another rebuild already??

I have an article that explains what's going on and how you can tell a fire ring leak, which it sounds like you have, from a pressure cap problem. https://intrepidoverland.com/bad-coolant-pressure-cap-or-bad-head-gasket/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Chemical tests are no...

Another rebuild already??

Ok so sniff test showed no exhaust gas was present in header tank. Have given her another good bleed and after 40 miles the header tank is at min. Expansion tank is overflowing and bleed rail empty’s when I shut her off. Anything else I can try? Noticing a few bubbles entering the header tank during...

Re: Another rebuild already??

I would be keen to give it a go. Seems only right that I should know how to fix and maintain my own van.

Getting a sniff test done this week so will see what happens then go from there.

Re: Another rebuild already??

Mine, only one on a diesel, I suspect, was due to overheating. I am sure my mot guy left it running on its test and the fan never kicked in. Ran it for about a year with the problem, sometimes it was ok sometimes pressurising, eventually it was pressurising all the time. Yours, if not overheated, c...

lefty67 wrote:Exact same symptoms as mine. After alot of chasing around including new thermostat, pump, coolant changes etc. It turned out to be a cracked cylinder head!

Any idea why the cylinder heads are cracking?

I’ve got 2 brand new heads on there.

Re: Rust prevention 1988 2.1dj

The sad truth is that if you’re noticing rust appearing on the seams, it’s already rusted from the inside out. Put some photos up? If rear arch seams, see off you can pull the internal panels below the rear most windows enough to peek down to the inside part of the seam. Look behind your fridge. Do...

Rust prevention 1988 2.1dj

Hey, I’ve had my van for just over a year and drive her at least twice a week. Starting to notice rust in the seams and other usual places which I’m planning on getting sorted but just wondering how you guys keep your vehicles from rusting? I know the window seals are letting in water so will need t...

Re: Possible coolant issue?

Wouldn’t you know it, both header tank caps I bought from vwheritage we’re unable to suck coolant back in. Ordered 2 more from brickworks and they work perfect. Waiting on coolant pipe coming back in stock then we should be good to go. Will only buy from brickworks from now on Sent from my iPhone us...

Nic is that popping out of 2nd gear when off load, on the overrun or under load right foot down accelerating ? Take a good look at the linkage to see if there is wear or missing parts or parts like rubber boots that could be acting as springs on the linkage or blocks preventing full enagement of th...

Possible coolant issue?

Spotted a new symptom. On a short journey once she got to temp, the red light came on but needle was looking normal. Overflow tank was full and header tank was at MIN mark. I slowly unscrewed the blue cap to top it up and as I did the the coolant level rose to the brim which meant I couldn’t top it...
