Job 1, Order a new sump nut. Then when you put the new one in, Torque it correctly with a new washer.
Its a taper thread plug on the transaxle. No washer.

Ah, So isn't this one supposed to be a 17mm or so hex ? I guess they welded the bolt in due to rounding it or not having the tool.

Re: Removing a welded drain plug

I have welded to sump plugs in the past when they are seized and needed heat and/or another bolt welding on for turning them, It looks like this one has been heated in the past to unseize it. It probably isn't welded to the aluminium. Job 1, Order a new sump nut. Then when you put the new one in, To...

Re: Painting the Dashboard

I stripped mine out and resprayed it satin black, I found it relatively easy to remove and strip.

I was going to post up some pics of the work but it seems I didn't take a single one worth looking at despite having the dash out twice.

Re: Advice on wheels for sale

Two of those eBay ones look like they have been in a fire. I was about to comment the same, I would only buy those if I needed the two painted ones for a trailer. I have a similar style wheel on mine, That are rated for road use and van use. Search for... 4 x 15” Dotz Dakar Silver alloy wheels 5x11...

Re: Ignition coil options?

What are the downsides of the triple electrode plugs please ?  I don't recall what I have in now but I definitely had them at some point.

I put one of these on mine a few months ago...

It came with a new bush too, Seems to work well but I can't speak for its longevity yet.

Re: New member

Just an engine ? or a whole car ? Anything will do, It depends on you really, Older is generally going to be simpler but not always. There is a vast amount of info out there on VW Aircooled engines, I guess same for the A series in the Mini. Some of the Ford engines will also be well catered for in ...

Re: Replacing blower fan without removing heater box

Here is a pic of the heater box split without removing the matrix pipes. You can see the motor and resistor as well as a still piped up matrix, I stuck mine back together with blobs of black silicone as the case snaps back together fairly well and should be easy to strip if I have to do it again. ht...

Re: Replacing blower fan without removing heater box

I did mine by removing the dash, Then splitting the heater box in place, This meant not having to un-plumb the matrix, However I don't really see an easier way, It's not like the dash is hard to remove on these.

R0B wrote: 01 Mar 2025, 17:27 Well, every day is a school day. I can't say I have come across that being done. I can't see why anyone would bother though, TBH.

I only did it because I happened to have the set and thought I would try them out. But I wouldn't buy a set.

You put an extended nut on the rocker carrier and they bolt to those.

Re: Rocker Covers

I have bolt-on rocker covers on my 1.9DG, While they don't leak I do intend to go back to the spring clip ones as they are just much easier to service/remove and very easy, cheap and quick to swap out the gasket. I would suggest just getting a couple of gasket sets in and keeping what you have. Did ...

Re: Headlamps improvements

I converted mine to LED by swapping out the whole light for ones designed for a Jeep. IIRC I had only to drill and tap a few holes to get them to fit, That was 6 years ago or more and never had a problem. In all that time only one MOT tester even mentioned them. They have rings around the edge for s...

Re: Wbx exhaust- how rigid are they?

I fitted one of these to mine a few years back. https://vwspeedshop.com/product.php?productid=16733&cat=513&page=1 As you can see, No flexi joints or anything, As long as it doesn't touch the body anywhere and is well supported it can be fixed rigid. As I thought about it I realised my Skyli...

Re: Coil

That's really useful.  I won't be doing any of this but will pass it on to auto electrician. You shouldn't really need to, If you describe the symptoms they should have no problem concluding and testing what might be wrong. I used to own and run a garage and my preference was just a description of ...
