Oil light at startup
Hello, I've got a 1984 diesel with a 1Y 1900 NA in it. Did an oil change the other week (putting TRIPLE QX Mineral Diesel Engine Oil - 15W-40 in) and since then my oil light has been staying on after starting for varying amounts of time, but up to 10 seconds. If I start/wait til it goes out/stall/st...

Re: Speedo cable replacement
Really useful guide. I'm considering replacing mine but I'm in the odd situation of having a dodgy speedo that's quite useful! Speedo is km/h, and noticed shortly after buying the van that the speedo was innaccurate. After checking with GPS app on phone (on many separate occassions at a wide range o...

Re: Cheap Coolant Pipes ?
Looks like there's now quite a few places selling 10m lengths of reinforced EPDM on ebay.
25mm internal diameter / 34mm outer.
Rated to 120°C, and cheap – e.g. £55 for 10m here.
Any good? Or is the 25mm internal going to be too small?

Re: Metal fragment inside alternator – replacement?
Thanks bigherb.
Looking at a photo of that bushing, and the last photo I posted, I'm wondering if it's possible I already have that part in situ but that it's seized? If that's the case it's very very seized!

Re: Metal fragment inside alternator – replacement?
Right, sorry!
So new bolt, swap the electrical tape for a roll pin (and the old alternator for a new) and all may be good.
Thanks.

Re: Metal fragment inside alternator – replacement?
Oooerrr indeed! Been talking to forum member garyd who may be able to supply me with an alternator fairly cheap, but I've been looking at my alternator bracket today and think I might have a problem as the two holes are different sizes – the one furthest from the back of the vehicle (foreground in t...

Re: Metal fragment inside alternator – replacement?
With the aid of a belt I managed to get the pulley off without too much bother. I'm going to order a replacement but out of curiosity I proceeded to take it apart to try and figure out why it's not working/identify the source of the metal fragment. Looks like there's something missing from behind th...

Re: Metal fragment inside alternator – replacement?
Yeah definitely can do that if it's an option, wasn't sure if the axle length might be different!

Re: Metal fragment inside alternator – replacement?
Ah ok, great! The pulley on that one on eBay sticks out a lot compared to what I've got sat in front of me. alt.jpg Dropping it back in, it looks like the longer pulley 'neck' would cause issues as the belt runs pretty close to the oil filler tube as it is. alt2.jpg This looks like the right length ...

Re: Metal fragment inside alternator – replacement?
OK then, think a replacement is going to be a lot better than sticking with something that's been bodged. Only problem is I've got no idea what I'm looking for or where to look - do I need a direct replacement or will a lot of VW Bosch alternators go in without much fuss? I know I've got a 1.9 1y en...

Re: Metal fragment inside alternator – replacement?
Bigherb – yeah that looks like it! Oldiebutgoodie... yeah you're right, think it might be the hole that's wrong though rather than the bolt :? IMG_20170225_151240.jpg Surely that's not from wear... has it been drilled out by someone? The bolt's a bit odd too – the bit with tape on it is wider, then ...

Metal fragment inside alternator – replacement?
Battery light had been flickering now and again, suspected it was time for a new regulator. Then the other day I was driving and it started making a metallic rattly noise, then heard a loud bang. Fairly sure it was the alternator as the metallic rattly noise then stopped, and the battery light staye...

Re: Videos: Gear Linkage and Lever Rebuild
Interested in doing this at some point as my linkage is a bit worn and popped off not too long ago.
Looking on Brickwerks all the kits seem to be 5 speed, anyone know what the deal is with 4 speeds?

Re: Help ID'ing diesel engine
I'd currently rate the chances of anything being read off there ever again as slim to none but I'll see what some patient rubbing yields when it's less wet and windy outside. I know it's got 100K+ on it but if I'm getting good MPG / 70mph / no oil leaks / no smoke should I be concerned about its, sh...
