automatic gearbox losing fluid when filled up
I filled the automatic gearbox of my 1987 1.9DG petrol T25 up to the full mark (with engine running as per instructions). Parked her on my sloping drive, nose down the slope. A couple of days later I found a quantity of gearbox fluid in the drip tray that I use underneath the engine/gearbox. Tracing...

Re: 1.9DG not starting after weeks parked
Well, after fitting a Pierburg one-way valve (Brickwerks) in the input fuel line, and then leaving her parked pointing down the drive for two and a half weeks, I tried starting her this morning. After some expected brief churning to refill the carb, she started and ran normally. Thanks for all your ...

Re: 1.9DG not starting after weeks parked
Thanks. I have added a non-return valve to the input fuel line, and will see how the starting goes after a few weeks of sitting on the drive.

1.9DG not starting after weeks parked
I have a starting problem with my 1987 1.9dg petrol waterboxer after being parked for several weeks on the drive. Despite prolonged churning of the engine, the petrol pump fails to get fuel into the carb. If I take the fuel feed off the carb and suck until the fuel reaches me, then reconnect, she wi...

Re: Won't idle then dies after hot engine restart
I hope this is my last post on this. Yesterday I removed the fuel line from the carb and had the engine cranked. Took a while for fuel to appear and then just about managed to pulse over the top of the pipe (held vertically level with carb). Clearly a problem with diaphragm. Ordered a replacement fu...

Re: Won't idle then dies after hot engine restart
Tried a cold start the following morning, following VW recommended procedure (see below). After extended churning she started and ran/idled normally. Looks like a fuel problem. The VW warm start is with full throttle!! Official starting instructions from VW T25 manual Cold start: • Depress accelerat...

Re: Won't idle then dies after hot engine restart
Have fitted new battery this evening. Had to spin the engine for a while until it caught -carb fuel evaporation over 3 hot days since last running? Did some hard 60 mph driving to get engine hot, went like a train, then back home and switched off. After 10 minutes restarted with no problem.Drove bac...

Re: Won't idle then dies after hot engine restart
Thanks for the point about air leaks and gaskets. The carb has a 5 mm thick black insulating gasket, and the mechanical petrol pump has a 10mm thick black one. I have checked the various pipes linked to the inlet system, and everything seems to be fitted OK. I hope to change the main starter battery...

Won't idle then dies after hot engine restart
I have a 1987 automatic with reconditioned 1.9 DG water-cooled petrol engine that from cold starts and runs well with no problems. However, this (v hot) weekend on the way to a VW fest I stopped at a motorway service station, and when I restarted she caught but would not idle and hesitated when the ...

Re: Replacing leaking expansion tank
Many thanks for the advice and support! The new tank came today from JK and was swapped over with no problems (Phew!). I siphoned the coolant out of the old reservoir and refilled the new one with it. My only problem was that the old spring clamp on the upper hose didn't produce an adequate seal, an...

Replacing leaking expansion tank
The expansion tank on my 1987 1900 petrol Transporter has developed a hairline crack just below the threaded portion, and weeps coolant when under pressure. I have a replacement tank coming from Just Kampers. Will I be able to decouple the hoses from the old tank, couple them up to the new tank, and...

Re: Automatic: sourcing starter inhibit contacts block
Many many thanks for the support, steadied my nerves knowing I could get a replacement contact block!! I have fitted the new spring-loaded wiper, and the old contact block seems to be working fine. I had no reversing lights before, and looking at the old wiper have found it to be very worn and hence...

Automatic: sourcing starter inhibit contacts block
I have taken off the starter inhibitor switch (spring loaded brass wiper) and associated plastic contact block from the gear selector of my automatic. Brikwerks can supply a replacement switch, but say that they know of no supplier for the contact block (plastic with six brass contacts). Does anyone...
