Re: Engine issues
I took the advice on here and went campershack. I'm glad I did too, van is not not leaking and running better than it ever has since I bought it! Seals replaced, timing set up properly and all over a sudden hills offer me no challenge any more ;-) Thanks for the advice all and thanks to Andrew at ca...

Re: Engine issues
Changed the Coil and it might be my imagination but its seems smoother and more responsive. Got it hot enough to get the fan on and it seems OK so far. Guess I will only really tell on that front once its 25 degrees again on the M25
Still losing water hand over fist though

Re: Engine issues
Thanks
I will do a compression test at the weekend I think
It wont get any serious long use until the spring so I've got time to investigate at least

Re: Engine issues
I'm certain the leak is from both waterjacket seals. Top of one of the seals is coming away - perished rubber. Crystalised antifreeze right next to both the jacket seals
Maybe I will look at attempted repair and a carb refurb. It only does 2 or 3k a year

Re: Engine issues
I'm in Essex so that is one hell of a trek (at 50mph ;-) Other than the coolant leak, it doesn't overheat and seems to run OK though it does seem gutless (I guess they all do) Leaks oil from the sump plug. Exhaust will fall to bits for sure if I drop the engine. Van is completely original so I would...

Re: Engine issues
Thanks - yep I've heard of those people close who shall remain nameless. Not for me - If I go down the recon route I'll pay the money and put a proper remanufactured one in. I cant see me ever selling the van even when the kids are older so I will look on it as investment Thanks for the tip. just ha...

Engine issues
I spent some time at the weekend investigating the various issues on the van that I've suffered during the summer. (1988 Autosleeper Trouper, 1.9 DJ totally standard, 120,000 miles) Losing coolant: I have looked at what I've added over the summer and I know now its lost 1.5 litres over 1000 miles. L...

Re: Engine dieing in traffic issue
had the coil off last night and got the multimeter out to have a look Primary winding is over an ohm, which according to the brickwerks site is out of tolerance. Secondary winding was in tolerance. This is stone cold of course, not sure what will happen once hot I think I will switch it out. Brickwe...

Re: Engine dieing in traffic issue
+1 for a coil problem here. Mine worked fine when cold but played up when the van warmed up. I didn't have any mid throttle at all and had to rev the nuts out of it to pull away and have foot to the floor to move along. The coil was extremely hot to touch. Replaced this and symptoms went away. Migh...

Re: Engine dieing in traffic issue
As Kev said, you really need to clean out the float chamber and jets before you start spending more money, its always best to do the free things first. Maybe if your local indy is a decent enough guy, then you can remove the carb, split it, take it down to your local and ask if he wouldn`t mind giv...

Re: Engine dieing in traffic issue
Hi, Not sure if it helps, but some years ago I had a bike that had similar symptoms would run for a while then miss and fart in traffic then would cut out as soon as I turned the throttle but run again after 15 mins. I thought it was a crud in the fuel tank or blockage in the line. It turned out to...

Re: Engine dieing in traffic issue
Have you tried some of the simple checks? If you haven't already done so, I would change the dizzy cap, rotor arm, and HT leads. Did change dizzy cap/rotor arm plugs and leads when I first got it. Though from what I remember they were just kampers parts and that was 3.5 years ago now. I might switc...

Re: Engine dieing in traffic issue
Just back from my latest trip - more trouble! Changed the accelerator pump and cleaned up the visible areas of the carb with carb cleaner and some redex. Ran it round locally and convinced myself that it was better - seemed smoother and more responsive when accelerating, particularly in second. Ran ...
