Re: Gas soldering iron recommendation or should i crimp
Use the proper sized cable, matching eyelets and tools - crimping wins out. With a good fit and the right power there isn't an opportunity for moisture wicking etc. I used to solder everything but not anymore. For big stuff I use one of the hydraulic crimpers as listed above. If you put a junior hac...

Re: Temporary shelter/garage
I'm exactly in this position too. My van needs stripping and chopping and I need the covered space to work in medium term. I've looked at secondhand timber garages, sectional concrete garages and tent garages..... Would like to hear from others with first hand experience..... I have a pop top and wo...

Re: Seam Rash - What can we do
'Cosmetic' seam rash? Personally I think there is very little you can do to 'fix' seam rash once it is there. Most corrosion at the seams is either due to cracked sealant letting water deep into the spot welded seams via capillary action or condensation getting into the seams from the inside of the ...

Re: Home made swing away spare wheel carrier
Well done John... it is one of those projects that no doubt so many of have 'in the pipeline' but never get round to actually making! Thanks for sharing the details. Anything you'd do differently in hindsight? Thanks Slider 2 Well.... I painted the metal with a decent primer and 4 coats of rattle c...

Re: Crimpers
Agree with the anti soldering argument. Trouble with crimping is the fact that even when people (like me) buy stupidly expensive elpress / TE crimp tools, if the cable is even marginally off the intended wire gauge, the crimp fails to engage properly. To do it right you need the right connectors for...

Re: Rear spare wheel carrier
I'd have thought a drop down carrier at the back would be much easier to fabricate and have less chance of panel deformation and be far more reversible as it could all be custom bumper mounted. If you wanted to spend a bit more you could go side hinged using one of those stub axle kits to be welded ...

Re: Sliding Door Rail
Good job.
Where are you working? Is that one of those car sized gazebo / garage things? Enough space to work it without fear of setting it on fire?!

Re: O/S/F wing & seat mount repair advice please
:D Hmm. Ok.... So with some deep soulsearching and headscratching I think I might have figured out where (my perhaps misguided) but well intentioned advice came from..... I believe it was a thread about how someone had sectioned their existing wing, repaired the b pillar and then welded the arch bac...

Re: O/S/F wing & seat mount repair advice please
Just be careful about cutting it all out in one go. I've read a couple of really interesting threads where people have gone to put it all back together and found that the door opening has closed up without the arch in place and have struggled to then get it all back in the right place before welding...

Re: Decent Socket Set??
I have a Bahco 3/8" and also a Bahco 1/4" socket set, hex sockets. They really are fantastic sets. Good call... the Bahco Set 138 is 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" in a massive all metric set for £150. I'd rather not have plastic covered handles on the ratchets but other than that it ...

Re: Decent Socket Set??
The AF sockets are useful for rusted nuts/bolts (when you need an in-between size hammered on!). EG 1/2" is 12.7mm, perfect for shifting a slightly rounded off 13mm fixing. That is what bolt grips are for! https://content.cromwell.co.uk/images/854_854/g/jeeps/565/irw5653610a.jpg For the £20 od...

Re: Decent Socket Set??
seems like Halfords it is then... £170 for the 200 bit set. I suppose if it lasts a lifetime it will be worth the money. I get paid on Friday, so Ill treat myself, unless anyone has a kit to sell  There is another £20 off if you can find someone with a trade card.... Or blag yourself a trade c...
