Decided not to do anything just yet, 1 issue at a time. As soon as I've got the engine running properly, I'll re-visit this. Hopefully by then this will have resolved itself if it is just something on the outside of the matrix burning off. 

I went the other way completely! Re-con engine is in, just trying to get it running properly now. Let's just say I'm having a few teething issues!

I completely forgot... I tried the heater plate through the relay, expecting the 15A fuse to blow. It didn't. So ignoring the gaskets for the time being, I've been investigating the heater plate, but forgot to take photos.  :run I've had the manifold back off & the 3 bolts off of the heater cover. I'm guessing that the whole heating element should come out at this point, but it's well & truly jammed...
