Re: Air cooled 2ltr CU in Portugal - running like a pig.
Yep that’s the bit. Have no idea how it came out. I’m hoping that’s it’s been and gone through my engine. Without removing a lot of hardware and looking for it I have no way of finding it as it’s brass so not magnetic.

Re: Air cooled 2ltr CU in Portugal - running like a pig.
Yeh no problem - always find it frustrating when people don’t write how they cured it. No idea why it blew that cap off the old one - all I can think, tying in with the hill, was that I worked it too hard. Honestly I was reversing up a 15% hill, in 30 degree heat, with about an inch each side of the...

Re: Air cooled 2ltr CU in Portugal - running like a pig.
Thankyou all for your ideas and suggestions. Some of you have spent a great deal of time thinking and writing posts. I managed to find the holy grail of VW parts here in the Algarve (from a forum user on the Samba) and he was able to lend and eventually sell me a used rhs solex carburettor. Fitted i...

Re: Air cooled 2ltr CU in Portugal - running like a pig.
I did check the wiring. The coil, ignition amplifier were at 12.08v but the plug for the hall sender was 10.9v. I don’t where the volt has gone. I checked the wiring, cleaned up an earth under the dizzy, repaired some dodgy looking connectors but still the same. Figured maybe the idle stabiliser too...

Re: Air cooled 2ltr CU in Portugal - running like a pig.
I can’t upload pics from my phone on to here but want to talk to you about my carb. Looked at it again today and found that with the solex pdsit carb split in half I can access the jets. If you look at the carb from the top you have the air jet, the middle section where the main jet tube runs and a ...

Re: Air cooled 2ltr CU in Portugal - running like a pig.
HI Sarran,
Hoped you’d join in as well. I’m in Portugal somparts aren’t that easy to get hold of. What makes you think it is electrical and not fuel related?
The coil is 6months old - the distributor is probably original.
Thanks
Josh

Re: Air cooled 2ltr CU in Portugal - running like a pig.
I replaced it once this problem started as the old one was leaking oil quite badly. The push rod was only fitted 5000 miles ago and looked fine when I removed it. I have the old one (from before 5000miles ago) and it was a tiny bit shorter than the one currently in the van. It is mechanical obviousl...

Thanks though.

Re: Air cooled 2ltr CU in Portugal - running like a pig.
Video of my problem. Hopefully those of you who have been helping will see this and go “aha it’s this”!

I will check that terminal tomorrow as I need a rest from it before I snap a plug or something.

Re: Air cooled 2ltr CU in Portugal - running like a pig.
Hi, Just drove it with the different amplifier. Started up really well - almost instant. But still drives the same. Checked the voltages of the hall sensor outside to outside it measures 10.84v and the same outside to an engine earth. Losing a volt somewhere - is that normal? Is there a screen/mesh ...

Re: Air cooled 2ltr CU in Portugal - running like a pig.
Ol so tested the coil and got 11.97v then tried the plug going to the amplifier and it is 11.97 on 2 of the prongs. What does this mean? In terms of fuel it happened after driving a 100or so miles on the last fill up. Have put fuel in twice more andproblem still there. Would have been great if it wa...

Re: Air cooled 2ltr CU in Portugal - running like a pig.
Is the ignition amplifier the big square plug in the rear lhs of the bay? I just found an old one in my spares - plugged it in and the reading on the wires is 10.81v whereas the other was around 9.8v. Would this cause the problem?

Re: Air cooled 2ltr CU in Portugal - running like a pig.
Hi,
Just tried that and I get 9.87 across the outside 2 pins and around 5v for the middle and the earth.
Is this too low?
Cheers for helping.

Re: Air cooled 2ltr CU in Portugal - running like a pig.
I just tried big herbs hall sensor guide I.e. a piece of wire in the centre on the plug and the central HT lead removed. Ignition on, sparks coming from the HT lead. Does this def mean the hall sensor is faulty or would this always happen? Parts are difficulty to get in Portugal so I need to know wh...
