Re: High Idle Speed
Cable seems to move freely. Would leaving it ( given the intermittent nature of the issue) cause any long term problems?

Re: High Idle Speed
Thanks kevtherev. I'll try this and see. However, I assume if this was the sole issue, the engine would be running too fast constantly? In this case the over revving problem can occur later as well, ie after the engine has been running normally for a few miles. Today, I travelled ten miles from cold...

Re: High Idle Speed
Took the carb off again this evening, removed the choke unit, cleaned lubricated the external springs, shaft and cam mechanism and refitted everything. Adjusted the choke flap gap to 3mm - although it wasn't far off. Took the van for a run, and the same problem occurred as before. Running fine on th...

Re: High Idle Speed
No, I didn't adjust any settings on the carb (knowingly). But of course, removing, splitting, reassembling and refitting will have caused some disruption, even if I didn't set out to make those kind of changes in the beginning. Odd that it resets itself after restarting.

Re: High Idle Speed
I'm experiencing a similar issue. WBX 1.9DG, 1990. Pierburg 2e3. Had the carb off to clean it, and fit a new needle valve and float. new gaskets and reassembled and refitted. On starting from cold, the choke does its job. engine settles to a normal idle after a few minutes. After driving for a mile ...

Re: Van hard to start and poor idle when engine cold. Choke?
Until reading this I thought I could suck with the best of them. Still not sure if there is any range of movement left in the unit, but I am happy to submit to the counsel of those with more experience. Now with the carb reinstalled and fresh fuel in the tank and all the lines connected I tried to g...

Re: Van hard to start and poor idle when engine cold. Choke?
Hope you don't mind me resurrecting this thread. I have a 1.9 DG (1990) which has been giving problems, mostly due to water in the fuel from a perished filler cuff - now replaced and cleaned up. However, on investigations, I discovered the pull down unit wasn't working at all, so I replaced it. The ...

Re: WBX loss of power problems
O yes, and to add to the complexity of this I retested the pull down unit while I had the top off the carb this morning. It's broken. Doesn't do anything. So the original problem appears to have had more than one cause. Ordered a replacement from Brickwerks.

Re: WBX loss of power problems
Sounds like a plan Kev. I fear the tank might be shot. I took off the in line filter this morning and while it looked clean at first the filter element was doing its job - full of rust particles and crud. I blew out the lines from the fuel pump back to the filter junction and reconnected with a new ...

Re: WBX loss of power problems
Thanks Kev. Actually I did mention the discolouration of fuel in the carb bowl in my first post, but foolishly assumed it was fuel, not water. So, drain and flush the tank and lines it is . I really appreciate the insights from the forum. Grateful.

Re: WBX loss of power problems
I had another look at this water in the fuel suggestion from marlin owner. [ quote="marlinowner"]I had problems similar to this caused by water in the fuel, which came to a head after driving down the M6 in heavy rain. Fixed by fitting new fuel tank. disconnect fuel pipe from carb, redirec...

Re: WBX loss of power problems
http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/index.php/ignition-coil-t3-late-pin-type-green-label-2547.html This is the most commonly fitted coil, pin type Late van. Thanks for this kevtherev it looks like the one I should be going for. My van is 1990. I replaced the HT leads today, and the problem persists. The en...

Re: WBX loss of power problems
kevtherev you obviously have a story to tell about getting the right coil for this engine set up. GSF didn't have the appropriate part. VW Heritage show several, ranging from £25 - £70. Any recommendations? What's the difference between a Black and a Blue Bosch?

Thanks itchyfeet. I'm in Northern Ireland near Belfast if anyone else is watching this.
Off to pick up a set of leads tomorrow.
