Re: Fitting a new fuel tank

Thanks both for the suggestions. I can see how this will help with assembly too.  From my experience with taking the old tank out anything which helps the parts go together can only help.  I suspect this task isn't going to be the nicest job. Replacing slightly weeping plastic coolant pipes with sta...

Fitting a new fuel tank

I'm in the process of fitting a new fuel tank.  Old tank removed which was quite a challenge and my new tank is painted up ready to fit the rubber seals before fitting. When you fit the rubber seals are they just fitted dry or is some sealant recommended to ensure they don't leak? This is such a hor...

Re: removing hi top

I did this task a few years ago and completely removed the roof as described above with a kitchen knife.   What I found underneath was horrific and I've never have known the extent of the rust or had been able to repair it properly if I'd not removed it fully. https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3879/144...

Cab door repair sections

The front of my van is about to have some much needed attention with replacement front wings.  Whilst I'm doing this, I also want to address the crusty door bottoms which have also deteriorated.  Most of the suppliers sell a repair section for the very bottom of the door which covers the step, but I...

Thanks - that's the kind of thing I was looking for.  There is even an agent nearby.

More economical welding gas

Having done a partial restoration of my van 8 years ago it is going to need some additional panel work which didn't need attention at the time.  The last time I did this I was using those disposable gas bottles for my MIG welder like this https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/co2-gas-cylinder-600g/ Before...

Re: Faulty starter motor

1.9 DG wbx. Not sure that starter will fit, but thanks for offering.

I'm really wanting to reconditioned it myself. It's likely to be cheaper and I know it will be done properly.

Faulty starter motor

I'm having a run of issues at the moment and the latest is the starter motor. Problem is it sometimes fails to turn. I hear the solenoid click every time, but it often doesn't turn over. All connections are good and I'm getting good voltage readings to the starter terminals. Annoyingly I had exactly...

Re: Front spring replacement

Yes well spotted! It was intentional as the old ones rotted as they filled with water and mud. This way round I thought they would drain and last longer.

Hopefully not a bad modification. Can always correct it.

Re: Front wheel bearing replacement

Well whilst I was replacing suspension springs I inspected the bearing which was making a rumbling noise. On removing the hub / disk the inner bearing just fell apart and came out in bits: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48081350228_288d15d5d8_c.jpg The subject of replacing the bearing is well c...

Re: Front spring replacement

Well I've done it! 2 Springs replaced and it took about a day in total - quite a long day! Highlights are: Jacking up and securing on axle stands - well almost, but I think my solution is safer: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48081388128_899669fe2d_c.jpg The shock absorber needs to be remove fi...

Re: Front spring replacement

Thanks for replies. I've ordered springs from Brickwerks and they advised unbolting the track control arm to extract and refit the springs.

I'll post some pictures of how I end up doing it for future reference.

Front spring replacement

Just got an unexpected failure point on my MOT test today - a broken front spring! Just seeking information on how nasty this job is to do. Looking at the Haynes manual it says you need to remove the complete track control arm! Looks like a big job. Any tips on this job? I own a couple of spring com...

Re: Front wheel bearing replacement

Thanks - I'd not spotted the itchyfeet post and pictures. It looks achievable with tapping in place with a hammer. I was worried that I'd need a big press to do the job. I can make round press surface as shown if I don't have a suitable big socket; have access to a lathe if needed. Van is in for it'...

Front wheel bearing replacement

One of my front wheel bearings has begun to make unwanted noise - kind of a deep wah-wah-wah which is related to the van speed. Pretty sure it's a bearing started to give up. I've jacked up front and the wheel and it's not showing signs of play, but I guess its only a matter of time. It has only jus...
