Id just like to chip in and say, I've got a 2.5hp 25 litre one, and though it's not perfect, it does me fine for what you've listed, and spraying.

Think I paid £150 for it.

This is my one from Olaf in Germany (2eimvwbus). It's simply beautiful, and goes straight on to a JX pipe. Simply beautifully engineering.

Does the starter turn the engine over? Mine did this (1.6d CS Too!), and it turned out to be the hot cable from the battery to solenoid had burnt out. I also replaced the starter, which was a 30 minute job (19mm socket and a breaker bar to gently persuade the clutch reservoir outta the way).
