As I was trying to get it off yesterday (moving it around) it felt like I was dis-aliening the gears. Is there a good way to make sure i have the alignment of the gears right before I put on the new part?

Hi everyone, Thanks for all the help. I need to replace this part but i can seem to get it off. I got the rod selector bit off, but this bit wont budge??
