Re: Radiator fan on all the time

My van sat on the drive with a blown engine - an 88 1.9 petrol. Interestingly enough, my battery was flat again, so could be working on the theory that whatever is pulling power from the battery without ignition could be the same thing that is making the fan go 'live' bad wiring? Will take out all o...

Re: 30A fan fuse- but where?

Sorry, not thinking - forgot you cant see what I am looking at!
84 continental fuses
- haynes says 30A on the fan electrical scematics and in the '86 is number 1, but agree number 7 in the older continental is only an 8a, got myself a little confused I think.
Cheers lads.

Re: Radiator fan on all the time

What a frustrating day! I tried again to check the fuses and relays, swapping them with my other bus. I then started her up and ran her for 20 minutes or longer with the heater blowing- nothing- temp gauge didn’t go near half way. I then ran a wire from the battery to the fan plug. I noticed that th...

Re: Radiator fan on all the time

OK, goggle up I dropped the spare wheel and could see the fan connector. I undid it, placed a wire in the female middle (it has 3 contacts) and with the ignition on I touched the male pegs on the fan one at a time. Nothing. I changed the wire to a side female port and repeated, touching each male wi...

Re: Radiator fan on all the time

Last night I had a look at the fuses and dropped the box to check the earth crowns – all looked ok and felt solid. I have the small ‘bakolight’ fuses? (single strip over a hard plastic/resin body) and when I have put the fan fuse (red) in, there have been a few small connecting sparks. I traced the ...

Re: Radiator fan on all the time

sorry, Thermoswitch!!!!!!!!! - I changed that over with my other van.

I'll have a look for 'groundings'. I'm rather new to this, i'm guessing I look around the fan and cables for a point it is making contact with the bodywork?
Cheers

Radiator fan on all the time

1984 1.9Petrol water-cooled. Just picked up a ‘new’ van and noticed a fuse out of its holder. As soon as I put it back in, the radiator fan kicked in and wouldn’t stop. I’ve dropped the front lower grill and it is plugged into the thermostat (engine cold). I've unplugged it to check connection and c...

Re: Cooling system over pressurised?

Cheers Kev for coming back so soon. Thought of that- have a brand new VW tank and cap- have tried a few caps ensuring I have the darlek one with VW code and it 'duck' sqarks. Cap and tank working well, but why does it overheat? Had a chat with Brickwerks to make sure I had the VW tank rather than th...

Cooling system over pressurised?

1.9 petrol water-cooled 1988 DG engine flat 4. New Forest, Hampshire Back in December one of my vans metal pipes corroded through and I lost a lot of water - I couldn't see the leak until the engine was turning over. I was AA'ed home, stripped the pipe out and repaired it, as a new one was £70 plus....

Re: Alternator bracket broken

So, £500 for an engine out and new bolts or £1200 plus vat for new engine and £500 for rebuild or a new tube and rejig - what a choice! It's amazing how much money you can throw at her- starting to think, well, if we are having a new engine, her upholstry could really do with a going over, and those...

Alternator bracket broken

When I bought my van, the bracket holding the alternator had sheared (2 bolts into the engine block). It had a secondary bracket bolted onto one of the small bolts on the face of the alternator and was also being held by the dip stick bracket and adjustor. Last week the dipstick bracket gave, rippin...

Starter motor model

My starter motor has begun to be a bit slack in disengaging and it is old, I mean, it looks like it came from the titanic after several years underwater. I'm off on a long trip later this month and want to take one along as a spare. When looking for a new / replacement, which model am I looking for,...
