Steering column confusion

So I swapped my steering column over for one in good condition and I'm now wondering what the hole was for on the old one. Any ideas? Hazard warning light?

Re: Whirring or whining noise on acceleration

I don't think that it had had a gearbox oil change for a good while. I'm going to have to get to the bottom of that leak. That should tell me where to check too.
In reflection the noise increases in note with road speed

There's no banging but occasionally it jumps out of 1st

Re: Swapping Lock Barrel in Sliding Door Handle ?

I managed to make my cab doors and sliding door match the ignition key. Bliss! Just the tailgate to do now.
Great thread :-)

Re: Whirring or whining noise on acceleration

After having another drive today, I don't think that's solved the problem. Could it be a whiny diff?

Re: Whirring or whining noise on acceleration

It looked pretty black but I didn't measure the amount :-( Here's a shot of the drain plug

Re: Whirring or whining noise on acceleration

Lol. Yes it was a bit. Might be worth a note on the wiki though. All's well that ends well.

Looking like the whining has very much reduced now to the point that I have to tune my ears in to hear it.

I think that the oil leak is CV joints though on closer inspection. Joy

Re: Whirring or whining noise on acceleration

OK. Lesson number 2. RTFM The air cooled 2 litre with a manual gearbox only takes 3.5 litres of oil. According to Haynes anyway :-)

Re: Whirring or whining noise on acceleration

Yeah. I did see that but went in favour of going in underneath and using a posh pump, bottle and tube.
I'm now in b and q buying cheap hose!

Re: Whirring or whining noise on acceleration

I read on the wiki that draining and filling was easier with the front raised. Draining maybe, filling? nope

Thanks again
