Re: valve guides

Thank's very much for your advice. I phoned a reconditioner. He said they never bother with these heads just put new ones on. Too much work? Will make some more enquiries but looks like I might have to bite the bullet and buy new heads. Will let you know how I get on.
Thanks again

Re: valve guides

The original guide I pressed out won't drop in so I assume there Is a difference in the diameter. Any ideas where I can get oversize guides?

valve guides

I bought new exhaust valve guides and after driving one of the old ones out i offered the new one to the hole. It went in without any effort. I assume it is not tight enough but Just campers say they are the right part they sell loads of them. Has anyone else encountered this and if so how did you g...

Re: rocker cover joys.

Don't really understand what was wrong, 2mm too long in what direction? It is the overhang. It reaches over too far and comes into contact with the head where the casting is a bit bulbous for the pushrod tubes. I suppose I could have ground some off it but I was a bit cheesed off by then. So it can...

rocker cover joys.

I thought I'd change the rocker covers and clips and gaskets. The covers looked so rusted they looked paper thin. I bought the covers and clips from jk and the gaskets from gsf. So far so good. Filled with morris oil and started up and checked for leaks full of confidence but was dismayed to see oil...

Re: fuel cut off solenoid

I've put the old one back on for now I wasn't happy with all that heat around the carb/petrol. Before I did that I measured the current it was drawing with a multimeter and compared it with the solenoid on the right hand carb. It was .45 amp compared to .12 amp so that would explain why it was so ho...

Re: fuel cut off solenoid

Finally got the new solenoid from vw heritage and although it doesn't look identical, it fits and the van runs okay. Just one thing I'm not sure about tho...Having run the engine to operating temp I touched the new solenoid to make sure it was still secure and it was very hot. Dont know if this is t...

Re: oh noes....petrol smell

When I got my van I had a similar problem. I found that some Previous owner had fitted battery covers and used self tapping screws to secure them. These had gone straight into the expansion tanks. Them smell was coming from them.
