Maybe your existing cylinders were ok with worn shoes but not with new?
I believe there is quite a bit of variation between different makes of brake cylinder, plus some have a light spring between the plungers to keep them in contact with the shoes, some don't.

Re: Brake drums won't go back on.......
I noticed when I replaced a brake cylinder on my 14" syncro that the old cylinder didn't push the shoes apart as much at rest as the new cylinder, so maybe thats an area to look into?

Re: Odd, what's going on?
Almost certainly an earth fault. Check/clean the ribbon cable connection on the clocks circuit board & the multiple earth connections near the fusebox

Re: JX cold start issue
I'd been on a good run (to borrow an injector socket) before testing the compression so the engine was nice & warm, but thanks for the thought.
I can't squeeze the primer, as its always full, so don't think there is an issue with air in the pump anymore. Its the same with power on or off.

Re: JX cold start issue
Spins over ok but if it doesn't fire straight away I think the diesel washes the oil off the bores & thats likely the only thing giving a good seal, due to the worn bores. I might be talking total nonsense, but its the only scenario I can think of. The AAZ needs totally stripping, so anything wo...

Re: JX cold start issue
Yes. Got a multimeter on them & slung it over the rear seat so I could see if the volts were there all the time whilst turning the key & all was ok. Even tried jumping them onto a separate battery just in case they weren't getting enough juice. Think its fair to say 3 of the 4 cylinders read...

Yes, with the injectors out you can see about a quarter inch protruding & they were all glowing nicely

Re: JX cold start issue
Checked the cylinder compressions yesterday. 1 was at 400 psi & the other 3 were at 200psi. Should be around 500psi so its pretty obvious now why its hard to start sometimes. Probably only one doing any work! Apparently 1 piston was changed some time before I bought the van 6yrs ago, when the ca...

Re: AAZ engine parts availability
Yep, was a long drive in heavy traffic to fetch the AAZ last weekend, and when I got it home & took the bearing caps off too see what condition things were in my heart sank. I did get in touch with the chap & he recons it ran perfectly before he removed it. Waste of time arguing with a fool ...

AAZ engine parts availability
Just bought an AAZ engine to replace the ageing, oil burning JX lump in my van & wondered wheres the best place to get parts for these? I got ripped off & the crank is very likely scrap due to a heavily seized big end so I'll need a replacement of some kind. Are they still available new or i...

Re: JX cold start issue
Thats a good tip, thanks.
Don't relish the idea of changing the glow plugs again but I'd happily do so if it cures my starting woes.

Re: JX cold start issue
They were all new a couple of weeks ago (NGK brand) & I checked all of them before fitting, so can't see them failing that quickly!

Re: JX cold start issue (but now warm start issue)
When it does eventually run its just as if its been choked up, and slowly over a minute or so of continual spinning it slowly gets faster & fires progressively more regularly until it runs on its own. After that it is usually fine for the rest of the day. Just been about 20 miles, stopped halfwa...
