Gearbox removal

Quick question...is it possible to remove the gearbox with engine in situ?
I have AAZ engine with ABN gearbox and am looking to change to AAP.

Ok, managed to get the last stage to 45 degrees...just couldn't get them to go any further..maybe a factor of two hole gasket and a non skimmed head. Anyway..all finished and up and running again. Slight oil leak from turbo oil pipe but nipped up fine and she runs like a dream. Definite improvement ...

tiny sliver of oil on the bolts not down the threads.....will attempt again tomorrow.

Thanks for the prompt reply..I think I'm inclined to agree with you about the head bolts. They feel bloody tight and I tried to get just a bit more on them and they started to ping!...time to stop me thinks.

Ladies and gents. I have just refitted my AAZ cylinder head with two hole head gasket. I flattened the head on a glass plate with 1500 grit paper and checked with straight edge. Perfectly flat. Cleaned out bolt holes and oiled new bolts as per manual . I have tightened bolts to stage three (40nm /60...

Nope!..managed to snap the bolt off with about 2mm protruding from the block! :P

Unscrewed with pliers.

Now just got to get the rest of it out of the head! :evil:

Ok so the big day arrived today. Time to take off the head and change the gasket. Thought I'd replace valve stem oil seals as well and lap in all the valves while the heads off. So managed to break free the head bolts and lo and behold managed to snap the head off one..front right nearest fuel pump....

AAZ head gasket..again

How can I tell without taking the head off if I need a two or three hole headgasket?

Should I just buy both and take the unused one back?

Also can't for the life of me find the engine number!
