Thanks - thing is when I got the van there was a black cap without the let off valve and no second tank - just wondered if this engine didn't have one originally.

Oh well, I guess its off to VW to spend some more of my hard earned ;)

Cheers

Expansion tank on 1.6d CS

I'm losing water in my recently (2k ago) reconditioned 1.6D CS done by Elite VW in Essex. Its been loosing it ever since I got it back, not a lot, but about a pint or so every 50 miles. The reconditioners seem a little reluctant to do anything about it because they say the van should have another ex...

Yeah - Was having the same thoughts myself - no woodruff key, even though the cam has a slot in the end... still, i'm totally sure there wasn't one in it. I've just got to drill out one more snapped exhaust to downpipe stud, then its reassembly time. wish me luck! I'm a bit worried about getting the...

I've just been having the same conversation over at the brickyard. It seems that there are 2 sorts - stretch and non stretch, but Bentleys isnt that clear as to which is which. I decided to get 'em anyway for £17 for the set its not worth worrying about screwing up the job.

If you can find one! I have had no luck so far. Garyd Yeah same problem here! besides, I haven't had the van long enough to be properly annoyed by the rediculously underpowered 1.6 yet - I need to learn to hate it so i can appreciate a new engine  I've bought a complete (and apperently good) ...

Camshaft advice

ok, after an annoying weekend changing my head gasket on my 1.6 CS diesel which among other things invloved snappng the end of the camshaft, i need to get a new camshaft. My local part supplier Millfield Auto Parts (very good prices for most stuff) will do me one for £135. Euro Car parts do two, 1st...

If your oddometer is working it would suggest that everything up to the speedo is ok. Sounds like that actual gauge is faulty.

but why were you trying to remove the Cam Pulley? It's got a fully enclosed cam belt, so it has to come off! believe me I would have left it on if I could ;) And what the hell was your garage built from? One of those cheap (£550) metal garages - it looks pretty strong and I'm sure it would have sto...

I've been doing the same job today... I had a bit of a disaster when removing the cam sprocket though. I couldn't get any pullers on the sprocket where it was and was at the end of my teather so tried a little gentle persuasion with a hammer - STUPID IDEA. It really doesn't take much 'tapping' to sn...

If the water is not kept under pressure it boils in the block, turns to steam and starts popping stuff. The pressure keeps the coolant from boiling (along with the antifeeze which raises boiling temp). Same reasons that mountaineers water boils away when they cook before its very hot and why pressur...

forgive my lack of clarity ;) I just read back my post and wanted to say that I wasn't questioning your judgement! Although I have always worked on my own vehichles and come from a family of grease monkeys, I've never owned or worked on a T3 before. I really don't have the first clue about the abund...

I can't offer any great advice, but sympathy aplenty! Same thing happened to me on monday (1 day after getting my van). Fortunately it seems my problem was a leaking hose, thus stopping the system from pressurising enough (until it turned into a team train ;)) Check for rusty stains... you may be lu...

if thats the case then it could well have damaged splines.how can you tell its not straight... 'cos its on nearly upside down :) had a look at the track rods/arm and nothing looks bent. The tracking seems fine, good in fact, even though its been bloody windy today. No sign of tyres scrubbing out ei...
