Radiator core size

Hi folks, When looking for a rad to replace my leaky one I knew mine wasnt as thin as 32mm so I ordered thge other readily available 44mm radiator. I have finally got round to removing the front LPG tank in order to change the rad and having removed mine I have been shocked to find that the core thi...

Re: Another rebuild already??

The AMC valves seem to be made of cheese and the collet grooves soon mis shape leading to dropped valves. I have found that 6 times out of 10 the original vw valves are able to be refaced to a serviceable condition. If not get the valves from Brickwerks as they are reasonable quality. It is pot luck...

Re: Early DG Thermostat 80 deg -vs- 87 deg

I run an 80 thermostat due to the rad being a bit blocked up, it is great in the summer but in winter it doesnt let the oil get above 80/85 which is too cool for oil and the heater is not its best either . I now have a new rad and at some point we are going back to 87 but I need to take out the lpg ...

Re: Distributor for 2.1DJ with 2e3

I have now covered about 40000 miles with this set up and have absolutely no melted pistons or burnt valves. Just an oil leak round the dipstick tube!!!!

Re: 2.1 MV engine

Yes MV's are borderline but its not difficult to fit one and some of the chinese ones are OK. probably 150-200 pounds in total with stat plate and hoses. With Synthetic Oil you are probably OK without unless you tow or do alot of fast motorway runs.

Re: Another rebuild already??

Rebuilding is always an interesting thing. There is the measure test and test again route replacing all slightly worn items and cleaning everything spotlessly, new AMC heads and new non AMC valves, new hoses new pipes, etc etc then there is the wang a couple of new heads on and hope rebuild. My firs...

Re: Distributor for 2.1DJ with 2e3

I am running a DJ engine with a 2E3 and the DG dizzy. It runs great no problems . The advance curves are so similar overall taking vacuum and centrifugal into account that it really is no problem. I have no Pinking on Petrol or LPG and pretty sprightly acceleration for an Auto. As for the rejetting ...

Re: 2.1 MV engine

My 2.1 DJ needs an oil cooler. It would regularly run at over 130 /140 degrees C without. I fitted a sandwich plate and a thermostatic valve to mine and a 26 row oil cooler next to the gearbox . Now It runs 90 -100 unless I really work it hard up a hill when it may reach 110 in the summer.

Re: Earlier and later heads are slightly different

My heads have not cracked in the combustion chambers but just under the outer head bolts on the plug side of the head. The pads where the head bolt tighten are machined into the head and on the raised side the older heads had a coarse 90 degree cut out . On the newer heads this cut is made with a sm...

Re: Knocking noise

I have nice new Kolbenshmidt tappetts, with two turns or 1.5 they drain down in less than half and hour whatever oil I have in. They do however pump up much quicker with 15/40 semi in. Runs like a dog until they pump up.

Re: Rebuild Thread (Probably)

From my experience The pistons are probably ok with a clean and measure to check, fit new rings. The barrels are probably ok but you haven't shown any pics of the seal groove around the edges. If the grooves are good then a hone will probably suffice (check by measuring first to ensure they are not ...

Re: Rebuild Thread (Probably)

I would start by cleaning off the seal mating surfaces on the base of the heads just so you can see the real depth of the problem. Sometimes you can fill the pits with liquid metal and smooth off but looking at your photos some of the pitting goes over the edge of the combustion chambers where the g...

Earlier and later heads are slightly different

I have just had issues 3 years apart with two DG heads, both are from an older single piece bearing case. The have both failed/hairline cracked in the 90 degree lip behind the headbolt in both cases the right hand upper headbolt looking at the head on the engine. On looking at my later heads I can s...

Re: 1.9 dg 1987 only get 10ltr coolant back in ?

I always have this after putting an engine back in, the water hides in the rad and in the lower stretches of tubes. I drained mine to get the engine out the other day and drained 11 litres.
