Re: gearbox codes

Thanks guys for your replies. Apologies for not replying sooner. It's dark under that gearbox, and with my glasses, it was hard to see those pesky marks. We have identified the box now, and it is booked in with Aidan, in September, to be revitalised.

gearbox codes

Dear Oracle, I have G543 DKA. 1.6td hightop. Gearbox going wrong. I checked the code by following Aidans instructions, and it reads BH 08 069. when i checked this on the web, it suggested that this was a gearbox for a Karmann Ghia. Is this the right box for this van, or has someone bodged it up? Any...

Re: does the slack drive train cause cv bolts to fail

Thanks Covkid for the advice. I only changed those which had become damaged, but all were replaced last year when i took both half shafts out and replaced all cv joints with new ones from JK. As some play in the flange is normal, the play must be in the cv joints or fixing bolts. I shall check them,...

does the slack drive train cause cv bolts to fail

Dear Vangels, 1989 1.6 td high top. I had an unfortunate experience a couple of weeks ago where my near side half shaft failed just outside Farnham in rush hour. The bolts at the gear box side had failed. Prior to the failure, whenever I changed gear and released the clutch, no matter how gentle I w...

vent covers for door pillars

Dear Dub Wallahs and Rust Worriers, I have been unable to find any plastic vent covers for the hole in the door pillars, where the air coming through the doors goes into the pillar and then into the rear. I have seen them on some photos of some vans, but can't find them on any parts providers. Any i...

Re: handbrake adjustment

Dear Brake Nuts, I am particularly grateful to 'Oldie...' for the advice on guns! As they say..." I did ask for it". The other advice was also useful, so many thanks to you all. The handbrake is now working, but is at the end of its adjustment travel at the equalisation bar. So I may not h...

Re: handbrake adjustment

Dear Handbrake specialists, I have read your thread with interest, as I have spent most of today trying to get my handbrake to work, after having fitted Baxter's new front cable. My question relates to the self adjusters. I have manually rotated the adjust wheel, until the shoes are just touching th...

Re: gears

Dear Fergie, I have done something similar to you. I have replaced all the bits from gear stick to linkage pins, bushes, cups etc. I can not find instructions on how to set them up again, as , of course, I did NOT mark the splined shaft in the middle of the bus. The Haynes instructions are odd, and ...

Re: heater hoses.... which one goes where?

Dear Pirate-pete, thanks for the response. All the threads say that the inner radiator pipe takes hot coolant to the rad. Well my inner pipe is NOT the one at the bottom of the rad, so I think that's right. However, it comes from the water pump. Therefore the water pump is pumping hot coolant out. I...

Re: heater hoses.... which one goes where?

Dear Angels, thanks for the advice. I have applied to join, so should fairly soon have that information on my posts, if that is where they are generated from. Not quite so sure about that. But for now, my van is a G reg high top with JX 1.6 td. Where do those hoses go? I did read that the radiator h...

heater hoses.... which one goes where?

Dear Angels, I want to replace my heater hoses. I have new ones ready. BUT I can't remember which one goes onto which end.I can see the inlet at the heater end. I assume its the one with the opening device. But which end does it go to? Does it connect to the rubber hose connector on the offside, or ...

Re: Gear Linkage bush

Dear Covkid, thanks for that. Have dropped the Housing for the gear shaft, and discovered that my stick was welded back together just above the spring. There is no bush and no grub screw. Hence I cannot remove them and drop the stick through. I am going to have to buy the 'BW's' option. That is fair...

Re: Gear Linkage bush

Dear Covkid, Thanks for the advice. I have looked at it many times, and now have a pretty good appreciation of the set up. The Gear linkage bush in the middle of the van does not seem to have any rubber boots, which seems odd as presumably the crap gets in there as well. Why don't people use the shi...
