Re: Oil Cooler Bypass

cheap as chips, surprised they bothered removing it would take longer than replacing it https://www.brickwerks.co.uk/oil-cooler-heat-exchanger-general-vw-use.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; £25 - fair enough. Seems a no brainer I suppose, just need to try and conjour u...

Re: Oil Cooler Bypass

Cheers all. The trick is to bypass the coolant flow by joining the hoses, then do a few miles. That's what he's done. It's been run for a few miles by the garage and the coolant is clean, but also there's no sign of any oil coming out of the disconnected cooler either which the garage were thinking ...

Oil Cooler Bypass

I was on here a few weeks back with temperature then oil in coolant issues. Reasons for the latter would either be head gasket problems or oil cooler corrosion. Been to a new garage who suggested trying to eliminate the source of the problem, so for starters have bypassed the oil cooler to see if th...

Re: Over Heating Issue - 1.6 TD (86 Westy Joker)

Cheers - I'llo give it a short start up on the driveway over the weekend to check for smoke and will look at the oil. Coolant should be max 5 miles old, so whatever has happened has happened quickly. I've also got another mechanic lined up on recommendation of another local owner - he's going to com...

Re: Over Heating Issue - 1.6 TD (86 Westy Joker)

Sorry to drag this one up again but looks like more problems... Spoke to garage this afternoon, lots of talk about faulty thermostats, bad wiring etc... (i.e. electrical, not over heating) when I mentioned the fact that the expansion tank was bone dry I was told that they don't have to have anything...

Re: Over Heating Issue - 1.6 TD (86 Westy Joker)

Cheers again - Spoken to the garage and they're sending out a recovery truck to haul it back in tomorrow. We'll see where we go from there. It's only ever been on the back of a recovery truck twice, both times seemingly a fault from service. Just out of interest, is there anything important t...

Re: Over Heating Issue - 1.6 TD (86 Westy Joker)

Cheers all. I remember doing a bit of research into bleeding the system a couple of years back when I was looking at replacing the coolant but didn't change it in the end. Will have it out with the garage tomorrow and see where we get on. Camping was good though, even if we did accidently take the v...

Re: Over Heating Issue - 1.6 TD (86 Westy Joker)

Update, managed to get letter box tank cover off - bone dry inside - have put water in to max line, from what I can tell it's already started going down (haven't started engine) - no drips or leaks coming out of the bottom of it). Coolant level in main tank has dropped a little as the engine has coo...

Over Heating Issue - 1.6 TD (86 Westy Joker)

Long time since I've been round these parts...Long story short as we've just returned home to leave the van for the weekend to grab the car and tent instead  Before - Our van has always run well - temp gauge had a tendency to go AWOL every now and again, but worked most of the time, sat happil...

Re: Oil / fuel problems after service

Apparently the blanking nipple on the fuel line had split resulting in - quote - a fairly major fuel leak (takes moment to thank lucky stars things didn't end up a whole lot worse). Diesel's surprisingly hard to ignite. Even petrol can be hard. As much as that sounds like a challenge I'm done with ...

Re: Oil / fuel problems after service

Well van returned from garage but due to busy weekend no chance to take it out for a test. Apparently the blanking nipple on the fuel line had split resulting in - quote - a fairly major fuel leak (takes moment to thank lucky stars things didn't end up a whole lot worse). Van was delivered home whil...

Re: Oil / fuel problems after service

Mark - cheers. Garage came out to have a look this afternoon - they don't think it's overfilled (said they put 4.5l back in) but reckoned it was actually a diesel leak caused degraded plugs (bungs? blanks? black, about an inch long with a hole down the middle) in the fuel lines into the engine (anno...

Oil / fuel problems after service

Hi, not been on here in a while (mainly because the van was starting to stress me out over the damp and miserable winter). Anyway, sunny days are back so with new found optimism I got the van serviced and MOT'd on Thursday - only issues to report were a slightly leaky injector and a couple body work...

Re: 1.6TD Drain Radiator / Coolant

Cheers for the comments. I checked the existing liquid using the big turkey baster with the float in it which confirmed my coolant was essentially just water. I'm afraid I chickened out of the full drain in the end though. Given the weather and limited daylight I figured I'd go for the syphon the ma...

Re: 1.6TD Drain Radiator / Coolant

OK, next faff - which antifreeze colour? The guys at the local Motosave reckoned blue (I had a choice of blue or red) which I've bought - is this right? All the stuff I'm finding when searching is about the various VW G12+ options which seem to come in virtually every colour under the sun!
