Golfs had 2 fuel pumps, there is a lift pump in the tank to provide fuel at slight presure to the main pump. My pump (1.8 8v gti) is mounted close to the tank and slightly lower than outlet so that there is always a head of fuel above the pump to keep it primed. it's never played up. Bus originally...

the bush is very important, and mine didn't start when the engine was hot until I changed the bush and the starter motor. it just turned over very slowly, until the battery ran flat. T25 GTI OIL PRESSURE TROUBLE.
Hi all got the oil pressure problem sorted it was the pressure relief valve on the pickup pipe it must have been stuck. i changed the the pickup pipe and it cured it Anyone doing this conversion should check this then use a pressure guage when the engine is first started to check oil pressure .........
