Gutter mounted antennae are grounded through the screws which fasten the mount to the (steel) gutter. We've got an early Vango inflatable awning too, would recommend - went for the larger size, which is lovely, but it's pretty hefty to lug around when packed away - normally I hire a small trailer when going on longer hols to avoid having to fill the van up with it!

I know my stereo effects the bottom leaver on my van a bit, as it's a pretty tight fit in that part of the dash, with the cable for the lower leaver running under the stereo IIRC - it may be worth removing the stereo if you've got one fitted, see if that makes any difference.
