I had filled the new tappets with clean oil under pressure from a syringe and they were rock hard. However even left immersed under oil they still went soft. I had hoped that there would be no ai...

yeah I used a medicine sryinge to force oil in the side. they're rock hard now so hope that's enough

bit late now as new tappets sitting in a glass on kitchen window but if others play up I'll give it a go.

What's the compression like on that cylinder? If it's same/very similar to the rest I'd leave it be until you have another excuse to pull the head.

It's a late DG. It's actually the third engine in the camper. the last two have only just managed 25k each. I'm contemplatimg a conversion but no hope of doing that within 2 weeks !! ...., and noise is definately in the block. put the old rod to the ear and block and it just seems to be everywhere.....

I don't think it's tappets/lifters any more. The noise is only when there's any engine load. I think if it were tappets then it'd be all the time.

Unless anyone knows otherwise.

Took it passed a couple of garages yesterday and they're of the same opinion.
....and none wanted to fix it
