Problem solved ! It was the ignition control module, new one from Brickwerks although a little expensive compared to others.
Fitted it just now straight from work and first turn of the key buzz fired up and idling lovely .

Which sensor kicks in the cooling fan ? Mine has been working fine but decided to go on the blink today.
Normally kicks in bang on half way on the gauge until today I was running the engine up on the drive and usually when the fan kicks in I turn it off .
Today no fan kicking in . Any ideas ?

Does anyone know where I can get a gearbox or rebuild for my 1984 1.9 df wbxr ? I'm in Newport Se Wales.
The one I have is whining in second and I've been told by a local mechanic that the first motion shaft is noisy.

Hi folks , it's been a while since I needed to pick some brains here but a sticky starter has me stumped. Bit of a late follow up but the problem seemed to have resolved its self. after i turned the tickover up to compensate for the lack of only to find that after a trip out and yet another big bump ! on return the engine was revving it's nuts off while supposed to be ticking over , dropped the tickover...

I do have a df engine and also have a pierburg carbon fitted by someone in the past.i will try and post a photo.

My 1.9 water boxer has been running great for a while now hence no posts,but this weekend while going over a smàll but high speed bump that gave the van a jolt it decided to cut out and will not idle when warm after choke has cut out .
