Re: Refitting the speedo cable to the grease cap

Sorry to not update this post but life is a bit hectic at the moment.  The problem with the screeching speedo was solved and in case others have a similar problem, the following post helped:    https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=246885 I covered the speedo with WD40 inside and out.  I...

Re: Refitting the speedo cable to the grease cap

I take your points but the problem is definitely inside the unit. It is clear when you turn it with a screwdriver. I can't understand what could have happened to it. I checked them out and they seem very expensive new.  Anyone got any ideas about 2nd hand ones? I've been checking the internet.  I'll...

Re: Refitting the speedo cable to the grease cap

Unfortunately, I celebrated too early.  Now the speedo is making a whirring racket when it goes round.  I took it out and it is the speedo itself.  When you turn it with a screwdriver you can hear it like something is rubbing.  But I don't think you can take it apart can you? I've filled it with wd4...

Re: Refitting the speedo cable to the grease cap

Did it!  I pulled it out as far as it would go and wedged a very very small piece of toilet paper underneath and inside to wedge the cable end in the centre.   I also pushed the cable down from the speedo end (though I don't think this added any).  Then very carefully positioned the grease cap over ...

Re: Refitting the speedo cable to the grease cap

Thanks for your comments - really appreciated! The size of the square and the hole it goes into is fine.  I have seen that video, but on a second look - he seems to have more to deal with than me (and he has a little washer or something behind the square end). Diabolov suggested 'are you giving your...

Refitting the speedo cable to the grease cap

VW T25 1989 water cooled turbo diesel.  I have an old threaded speedometer, that runs through the square hole in the hub grease cap. I've checked all the past posts and looked at the vids on the internet but no-on seems to be having the problem that I have - which is odd.  When I I changed the kph t...

KPH speedo failed MOT

They moan about it every year, but this year they failed me even though I have stickers on the outside glass. I know this has been discussed before but I'm looking for some up-to-date info. I haven't been able to source any great stickers yet to add to the speedo face. I an get the numbers but not w...

cab lighting

I had a really good cab light with two scrolling reading lights as well as a central light, but sadly it has hit the grave. I can't seem to find a cab light anywhere. Is the original the same as the small interior lights? Does anyone have a link to a good alternative?

Re: Am I doing something wrong here...

I will do that. I saw that on a website linked to club 80-90

Anyway it looks like I've sorted the leak - don't talk too early and fingers crossed. I'll leave it for a few days and see if the battery is still up then. You guys are very patient - appreciated big time.

Re: Am I doing something wrong here...

that's brilliant news. I'll check that out. Perfect. I've discovered in this exercise that, for some reason, the interior van lights eg over the cooker on either side are all running off the starter battery. I never knew that. Obviously they aren't supposed to be. I'm not even sure what the leisure ...

Re: Am I doing something wrong here...

Sorry yes I got that the wrong way round. Yellow to a permanent feed, red to ignition live. But its that last bit...where is there an existing feed that I can link the red to? I don't have any devices in the cab that only work when the ignition is on - other than the lights.

Re: Am I doing something wrong here...

Mmmm! The live wire (red) from the radio is connected (with the yellow) to the permanent live in the cab. However, I need to connect the yellow to an ignition live. But there isn't anything except the lights that work off the ignition. I'm looking at the back of the display unit but I don't fancy cu...

Re: Am I doing something wrong here...

well Steve it seems like the old ways are the easiest and the best! A dim red glow from the light identifies the problem, and the culprit appears to be the 15amp (third along) fuse for: reading lamps interior lamps vanity mirror clock fag lighter radio I'm guessing the radio which I put in when I bo...

Re: Am I doing something wrong here...

Ah! I just read something which may explain my problem. I thought that I shouldn't connect the MMeter with amp settings because 12v would blow it. But this is wrong thinking, right? The amp setting measures different things. It doesn't mean less - just different.
