I use luckwell garage on hartcliff way £35 quid and specialise in vw (mainly t4 and cars )and are able to accommodate hi top and know about niggles
with older vans ... also if does fail theres a bodyshop and auto electrician in same place

if its not had a good run for a while it'll be suffering from tappet drain ,hydraulic tappet drain themselves of oil in protest at not being driven regular.... so yes will sound rough but could be hiding something take it for 7-8 mile test drive and if after that all should sound sweet
i think for panel to window 5mm -2mm think they do a 3mm -1.6mm but they to narrow and small(tried and tested ), i had abit of a mare with louvre window and ended up using 3mm-3mm seal then bought lenght of 25mmx1.25mm neoprene strip to make up the difference and glued to the inside of frame and pan...
is it a panel van or caravelle? if its panel van youll have a lip inside that its possible to finish with some knock on edging giving a nice pro finish.... 8) behind the cupboards .... well mine is a leisure drive conversion and they seemed to go for ply lining behind rear unit but not behind fridge...

get them pressed in by garage if i were you , there is a couple of ways to do it with threaded bar nuts washers and some 40mm pipe tho i found m10 with nuts stripped thread so used rod connector and was still lacking pressure so made up long thread on 40mm pipe with socket on with bushed down to 15m...
