Re: DG Syncro Gearbox Switch Locations (Photo)
Sorry - as noted above. The rearmost nut on the slave support is on the bottom of the bracket up in essentially a cave where you can't get a wrench on it. Nightmare access. If you bring the tranny to a welder, cover that beautiful red with a blanket, he can tack the bolt in place and then it's easy ...

Re: DG Syncro Gearbox Switch Locations (Photo)
Whatever you do, don't put that thing back in without replacing the lower starter stud with a 25mm bolt, and welding the nut on the clutch slave that's deep in the bracket. Those two will save you huge grief later.

Re: Trouble pulling low gear housing off tranny - real time
So, got the tranny back in this evening, and she drives quietly and shifts waaay better. The gear shifts are smooth snicks and no whine - I'm a happy Syncro owner again! Aiden - thanks for your timely tips. Made a huge difference in my confidence. This is not for the faint of heart. I installed the ...

Re: Trouble pulling low gear housing off tranny - real time
Aiden, Thanks a million for the comment on the burr last month. Since it quickly came off, I didn't give that another thought until last night during reassembly. I checked and sure enough there was a tiny burr starting. Wouldn't even have checked except I put it in my notes, which made me pull it of...

Re: Westfalia towbar for recovery/extraction?
Agree with Jed - should have made that clear. Still no center support. Also the above photo shows a hitch style that would be a lever to twist the structure. Straight line pulls from the attachment points are strongest. Pulls from long, unsupported members are the worst - especially when the actual ...

Re: Westfalia towbar for recovery/extraction?
Wow! Fascinating the differing features and such between countries. I have never seen that hitch setup. That thing is WAAAAY better than the hitches we have in the US for Vanagons though I should do some homework and check if there was a factory hitch sold here. I think not. The only hitch I have se...

Re: Westfalia towbar for recovery/extraction?
I have put a strap around entire suspension arms, and the Vanagon's can handle that as well. Wise to use an old towel or blanket to wrap first to protect the tow strap from sharp edges. Or through a wheel, etc. In mud these are messy options but better than having someone get hurt.

Re: Westfalia towbar for recovery/extraction?
Can't really tell on that military rig what was done. Sometimes an attachment point like that is made for a vehicle to move supply trailers around just for parking them, or extracting them from tight quarters. So that front center point may be intended only for light use on tarmac. If a close inspec...

Re: Westfalia towbar for recovery/extraction?
so would we say that a good quality tow bar setup bolted to the chassis is man enough for most recovery job's ? and that forgetting the ball hitch you could weld/ bolt some sort of recovery eye to that ? i see that as the same as mounting your own to the chassis rail, you could also have an eye eit...

Re: Trouble pulling low gear housing off tranny - real time
Aiden, Thank you for that, and a big sigh of relief what you describe was not the situation on my box, which has been well cared for by a meticulous previous owner. Turned out I am just a wimp. The low gear case was coming off fine. When it stopped and I looked in the gap with a flashlight and saw t...

Re: Westfalia towbar for recovery/extraction?
I think it's true the 2" square tube style hitches are not legal in the UK. We here in the US have some pretty crappy things automotively, but tow equipment is one thing done resoundingly well. Over built. Then overbuilt again to satisfy the lawyers. As a society, we probably tow more with our ...

Trouble pulling low gear housing off tranny - real time
So, I'm trying to pull the low gear housing off the tranny and I've gotten it smoothly about an inch apart. Then something solid seems to have hit. When I look in the gap it looks like low gear is interfering with the reverse idler gear. I've played with it to my satisfaction it won't line up the te...

Re: Westfalia towbar for recovery/extraction?
I'll second the caution on tow bars, though it is my understanding the issue is when securing the strap or cable to the tow ball itself. The swan neck essentially becomes a lever. The factory recovery points on the rear (loops) are welded on and secured directly to the frame end - great for hard pul...

Re: syncro solstice 2012
On the black tire stripes. Many of the trails have small paint dots for drivers to follow in terrain areas where the trail is not obvious. Such as on smooth rock faces like you comment on. The idea is to encourage offroad drivers to remain on the trail rather than cover adjacent surfaces with random...
