Bought a standard mechanical dizzy & coil from GSF - bus started up first turn of the key & runs like a dream so probably won't bother to refit the electronics. :rollin

Again many thanks to everyone for the help. :ok

Thanks a lot for the info on the alternative part numbers, most helpful to me. Although my wife & I like our water-cooled van (very comfy), I do miss the sound of the air-cooled engine & as it's an auto, it's a doddle to drive! :D

Thanks for the advice everyone, very much appreciated. :D I've already been through all the checks in the Haynes manual (joining the idling stabiliser plugs etc) without success so for now it'll be easier to change the coil & revert to the electronics later on. There's still a fair bit of mechan...

New Electronic ignition parts from where?

 My 1980 Westy has a 2.0l CU air-cooled engine that I've just rebuilt (new pistons, barrels, etc). Unfortunately the ignition system is dead (no spark) and so far I've tried a couple of second-hand dizzy's without success. I think the control unit is duff. For now, I've fitted a mechanical dist...

My son-in-law has taken the dizzy apart, managed to extend the wires, soldered new spade terminals on & plugged the hole with some sort of putty as a temporary repair - fingers crossed that it works...!

Thanks for the help & advice, much appreciated.

Thanks for the advice - only problem is I don't have the broken bits as the bus is in Spain so it'll have to be photographed & e-mailed. My son-in-law needs to get the bus running asap so he can bring it back to the UK in February. He had the engine out while he fitted new barrels & pistons ...

Broken plug on electronic dizzy - can it be repaired?

1980 2.0l automatic air-cooled The small electrical connecting plug on the side of the electronic distributor is missing & the wires are hanging out of the unit. Is the plug replaceable? If so where can I get the part? Alternatively, if I need to change the whole distributor, where can I get a n...

Thanks guys. After reading the above comments, the existing governed rotor arm is probably a safer bet. My other bus is an automatic so there's never been a problem with engine racing between gear changes - or when it's in gear for that matter....! My air-cooled bus is in Spain and the engine's curr...

Petrol pump blanking plate?

Having changed to an electric fuel pump, where can I get a mechanical pump blanking plate for a 1980 air-cooled 2.0 automatic? As it's now redundant, I'd like to take the old pump off because it keeps leaking oil.

Governed Dizzy Rotor - why?

:?: Does anyone know why my 1985 water-cooled 1900 engine has (what I think is) a governed distributor rotor (i.e a spring operated contact)? My previous air-cooled had a normal rotor. :?

Thanks for the website address however in the meantime, a local chap in Spain's had a look at my auto gearbox & some sort of pump inside was seized & hadn't been working for some time so he took it to bits & freed it up. Hopefully the gearbox'll now work OK once it's refitted - fingers c...

Golf 4-horn button wheel is 380mm, I've got one on my bus (cost £5 on ebay); straight replacement, no mods needed. Steering is OK provided tyres are at correct pressure although a bit heavy when doing a 3-point turn (no power steering). Main problem is small wheel obscures the dashboard warning ligh...

Automatic gearbox repair/replacement?

My other bus is a 1980 2.0l air-cooled automatic and the gearbox is on its last legs. :( Is there anywhere I can get a replacement reconditioned one (with or without exchange) or is the only option to have my existing one overhauled? The bus is in Spain but I can get the gearbox back to the UK. In S...
