Re: 1.9 Digijet automatic starts then stalls
Thanks for the replies - I appreciate the advice! I’m on holiday at the moment, so not able to test immediately, but I’ll work through these suggestions once I’m back home and will report back. As additional background, I recently moved to Norway and took my van to my new (to me) local garage. I ask...

1.9 Digijet automatic starts then stalls
I realise there are a lot of posts on similar topics - I've read most of them, but still struggling. My van is a 1985 1.9l petrol Digijet with an automatic gearbox. It was running OK until my local garage did some work to fix an oil leak, and now neither the garage nor I can get it to run properly! ...

Re: Headlights and reversing lights won’t turn off
Aha, that makes sense. My van does indeed have a tow bar fitted, though I’ve never considered using it - I’m slow enough going up hills already :D So I guess I’ve disabled my trailer electrics, which is no problem for the time being. And you’re right - it was a little blue Scotchlock. I’d never seen...

Re: Headlights and reversing lights won’t turn off
Well, it’s taken most of the day and a lot of groveling around in a carpark but, thanks to your excellent advice on where to begin and what to test, I’ve finally made some progress :ok I started at the front-right headlight, like you said, and traced the live feed back towards the fuse box. Just bef...

Re: Headlights and reversing lights won’t turn off
Sounds like good advice, thanks. I’ll give it a go tomorrow, starting at the right headlamp, as you suggest. The main fuse box by the steering column certainly seems dry, and I’ve never noticed any leaks in that area. Some time ago I had a leaking windscreen seal in the front right corner, which I g...

Re: Headlights and reversing lights won’t turn off
Thanks for such a fast and detailed reply - it’s much appreciated! I’ve removed the cover from the gear selector and disconnected what I assume must be the reversing light switch, but the reversing lights are still on :? Removing fuse 5 turns off the left main beam, which according to Haynes is corr...

Re: Headlights and reversing lights won’t turn off
Thanks for the reply! The wipers don’t work with the ignition off, and do work with the ignition on, so I think the wipers are working normally? Putting it into reverse makes no difference to the lights (ignition on or off): the headlights and reversing lights stay on regardless. I haven’t managed t...

Headlights and reversing lights won’t turn off
We’re in the middle of our summer bus trip and, as always, she’s keeping me on my toes! My van’s a 1.9 l petrol automatic (1984 Westy Joker). As far as I can tell, last night, in the early hours of the morning, the dipped headlights and reversing lights decided to turn themselves on for no apparent ...

Re: Fitting "screw-in" mudflaps
All sorted now
Turns out the previous owner had made lots of weird modifications to the underside of my van. Once I'd got rid of all the unnecessary home-made brackets the new mudflaps went on easily.

Fitting "screw-in" mudflaps
I've just had my van (1984 T25 Westfalia Joker) resprayed, and the guy that did the work has removed the old, knackered mudflaps and chucked them away. I've got a new set from Brickwerks: https://www.brickwerks.co.uk/index.php/mud-flap-kit-t3-front.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);ret...

Re: Red wire with white stripe to starter solenoid - what is it?
A quick update for anyone that's interested. I couldn't get the starter off this afternoon as the upper securing bolt seems to be seized in place: someone has previously inserted an Allen-key-to-socket adaptor into the head of the 8 mm Allen bolt and left it there. This might have been a good idea o...

Re: Red wire with white stripe to starter solenoid - what is it?
This site is awesome! :D Good deductive skills guys - that all sounds very plausible, so thanks very much. I'll try to confirm on Saturday. If this is how it works, then does that mean that I could connect these two wires (the red/black and red/white) onto the same spade connector on the solenoid? B...

Re: Red wire with white stripe to starter solenoid - what is it?
Sorry guys - location and van details now updated. Stupidly, it only occurred to me that the auto might be different once I started pricing replacement starter motors and saw the different types for auto and manual. So it looks like the options are: 1. Auxiliary cut-out relay, 2. Inhibitor switch or...

Re: Red wire with white stripe to starter solenoid - what is it?
Thanks itchyfeet, that sounds like good advice. I won't get chance to work on it again until Saturday, but I'll try to get a picture then. It basically looks exactly like Nicola&Tony's photo (the first one in this thread), except that there's a thin red/white wire coming out next to the red/blac...

Re: Red wire with white stripe to starter solenoid - what is it?
Interesting - thanks to all for the replies. Most of the solenoid pictures that I've seen on the internet have two spade connectors (like the one above). Does anyone know what the second one is for, then, or are they just two spades onto a single electrical connection? I'll try to trace it and see w...
