Gearbox type

Hi all, Think this has probably already been covered before but can't find it. Anyway, thinking I ought to change the gearbox oil and the Haynes says this about checking if the level is correct: " On 4-speed 091 gearboxes the oil level should be up to the bottom edge of the plug hole. On all ot...

Re: Starting problems

Yep, you called it CovKid. I would have done a load test earlier, but didn't want to buy another bit of kit and didn't realise you could just do it with a multi meter. Anyway, I'll check it again tomorrow *fingers crossed*. Oh, and the earth terminal for the horn had fallen off the steering column. ...

Re: Starting problems

Bit of an update #2 (for those interested): the day after my last post, I tried starting the van again (just to make sure all was still well) and got nothing. It turned over, but slowly. I looked up online how to do a load test with an ordinary multimeter (disconnect the king lead from the distribut...

Re: Starting problems

Bit of an update: So, the ends do just come off and the plugs now fit nicely in the caps (in case it wasn't glaringly obvious already, I'm learning absolutely everything as I go along). All spark plugs changed with new caps fitted. I tried starting the van, it turned over nice and quickly (the van w...

Re: HT leads

Veering away from the original post a bit now, but still relevant I think: When I took the old caps off, there was this greenish wet stuff on the terminals old HT terminal.jpg Any idea what this is? (I broke the old connector (orange bit) to make sure I could get the terminal out / not strip any mor...

Re: Starting problems

Hi all, Haydn: this is the state of my distributor cap before I replaced it. No idea how old it was, no mention of a replacement in the service history. distributor cap.jpg Also took the first spark plug out (only one, as I'll explain in a bit). Looks like this Spark plug (rear NS).jpg Which, based ...

Re: HT leads

You're right Martin, they do just pull off. The 1st one I tried was a bit stuck, enough to make me question whether it was supposed to be pulled out or if I'd just break it. I did end up pulling the insulation off the end of the lead as it decided to stay in the old cap. The others came off easier t...

Re: mystery wire

Thanks both. Wire had corroded enough to fall of the spade, which was also looking a bit sad. I stripped the wire back and put a new spade on. Will see if it sorted the thermostat issue once I've got the van running again (pending starter motor clean up / sorting spark plugs / ht cables out).

Re: HT leads

Then the fix is just to cut off the metal plug caps Idiot question here - is the only way to get the old caps off to cut the cable? I know for the caps that you recommend you just push the new ones on, but I bought the ones from brickwerks http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/index.php/ht-lead-component-spa...

mystery wire

Hi all,

Just noticed this wire (circled) was disconnected from its spade connector on the engine, does anyone know what it does? Have reconnected it now with new connector, no idea how long it was unattached.

Re: Starting problems

Thanks again CovKid. Will give cleaning a go. Have just ordered a couple of bushes (in case I damage one), new spark plags and connectors (mine are v rusty), new distributor cap and rotor arm as mine look a bit burnt (to my inexpert eye, but they're only a few quid each if not). Hopefully all of thi...

Re: Starting problems

Thanks CovKid. OK, so this morning's update: I checked the the butterfly (at, least what I think the butterfly is, photo below) while the other half pressed the accelerator all the way down and nothing changed. When I pushed the butterfly gently with a finger it reset to its original position. butte...
