Re: CT Engine Restoration

Hi, I'm no expert but rebuilt my CT engine last year and used a Beetle engine 'How to' DVD. The top end is the same as a beetle and you can use beetle heads/barrels/pistons etc, I did. The bottom end (crankshaft) is also the same as a bettle I think but not 100% sure about this as didn't buy new for...

Heater Control Cable Replacement

Hi, on a lovely warm day i'm trying to replace both heater control cables (dashboard to heat exchangers) on our 1981 1600CT Westy (LHD). I've done this before on a Bay no problem but these have me stumped. I've deptached the cables from the heater control panal on the dash and from the heat exchange...

Been running a 1776cc CT with twin carbs for a few months now, followed Laurie's advice. Would definately recommend you consider it. Makes the van sooooo much easier and relaxing to drive. You can actually accelerate (slowly) in 4th up motorway hills. Before any lose of momentum meant 3rd and 35-40m...

Thanks for quicjk reply Mocki. Was no sound of air from cooker even when all valves were turned on corrctly. Just phoned a mate who looks after forklift trucks and works with propane a lot. He suggested tapping regulator gently as "diaphram can stick on old regulators." Did that while wife...

Westy lpg system

Hi, got a 1980 Westy with standard under vehicle lpg tank supplying coker and fridge. This all worked fine until I ran it completely out whilst away over the weeked (gauge on lpg tank was showing zero). Filled up with lpg using 2 adaptors from Gasure, filler cut out after about 13 litres of lpg, gau...

Got an intermitent sound coming from the rear of the van, wife describes it as "a monkey knocking coconut shells together". It varies with speed and is louder when under load, not engine linked as does not vary with revs. Thought it would probably be CV joints, any other suggestions? Cheer...

Forgot to add for Fingle. My previous van was a bay window with 1600DP engine. When I bought it dizzy was shot, lots of play in it and no vacuum advance. That and the fact plug leads were on wrong made PO think it needed a new engine. Believed the hype and bought a screamer kit, blue coil, 009 dizzy...

Thanks for the offer Lloyd but I'm in sunny (??) North Yorkshire. I've timed it to 7deg BTDC with stobe and the thing starts easier and tickover went up. Sounds sweeter and isn't quite as 'fluffy' at smaller throttle openings. Setting of on a 500 mile round trip Thursday with the family. Engine will...

Thanks for reply Harry. Can't find static timing quoted anywhere for 1600CT but assume 7deg BTDC right as engine basically same as 1600 DP. Made new timing mark 12deg to right of standard one and set it to that. I had timed it with the strobe so was too advanced. Didn't realise vacuum retard had suc...

Sorry to jump in but earlier post from Harry has got me worried. I've a 1600CT engined van with twin 34ICT carbs and stock dizzy. I've connected advance vacuum but just blocked off retard vacuum on dizzy. Timing has been set as standard, which I guess is wrong?

Thanks, D.

You've probably got a sticking brake caliper piston. As your previous pads wore down, quite a lot of the piston will have been exposed to all the muck and crap underneath. This should have been cleaned off AND free movement of piston checked BEFORE your new pads fitted. Sometimes piston corroded so ...

Was careful spacing the rings and used std 20/50W mineral oil. Exhaust system from heat exchanges back is all NOS thanks to the wonders of E-bay. Will try running it for a bit longer and hope. Its got that smell that you get following M reg Mondeos up hills so not too hopeful.

Cheers, D

Newly rebuilt motor burning oil

Hi, think I know what the answer's going to be but thought i'd ask first. The motor is a 1776 CT that I've rebuilt myself using mainly secondhand parts. After problems with no oil pressure due to air in oil pump (thanks for all the help previously) finally got it running. After setting timing, readj...
