Re: Syncro versus ????

Hi Aidan, you are quite right, deep down I knew i would regret it all along, but we all make mistakes! Anyway, had a look over the mitsubishi now and it looks like its worth doing some work to it, so depending how far I get by then could be good to bring it to SP and catch up, although i may suffer ...

Re: Syncro versus ????

Been thinking about this recently. Still miss my syncro, and wouldn't hesitate to get one again, bar one problem, the price they are now fetching puts them out of my reach. So that left me to deliberate on the best affordable alternative. Just picked up a mitsubishi l300 4x4 in fairly good condition...

Re: word of warning

Always use some thread lock on them. If I remember correctly from years ago the torque is 45NM!

Re: Brakes

Slacken the handbrake cable right off. and adjust up the rear shoes. Readjust the handbrake cable and see what they are like then.

I guess a clonking joint will be quite easy to detect as knackered once I've removed the driveshaft? Does removing driveshaft releace the diff oil? You should be able to easily detect it without removing the driveshaft, just grab the shaft and feel for any play. Removing the driveshaft won't releas...

You will also need a starter motor from a manual. Also, when you come to do the wiring there will be an additional ecu for the gearbox and lots more wires, but its easy to work out, so you can just chop them off and get rid of them. One other difference is the guide that goes round the pulley to sto...

If the bolts are rounded off you will need new ones anyway. Don't think they usually come with the joint, but vw will be able to supply you with some. Cut them off, then you will probably find that if you cut a slot in what's left, now that the tension is off them they will just screw out. May need ...

Remember the sump is ally, so not really a sensible option unless you have access to TIG. Much better and neater to tap out to a larger size, or helicoil. But as a last resort your idea can be an option.

Sam.
