New gas struts will sort out the roof staying up problem. You could cut some fabric into small strips and glue them on to replace the duct tape. I would redrill the holes in the roof slightly bigger and use a bigger rivet. They are the weak point of the roof.

An RCD will not make any difference to overload. It is the mcb that will protect from that.
