Re: why were these removed when the pushrod seals were replaced

The pushrod tubes have an in-built tension in that they are compacted as the head is tightened down... The type 4 ones aren't squished between the head and the case. After the heads are bolted on, you can fit type 4 tubes - they just slide in the holes - the friction of the O rings, and that wire &...

Re: LED bulb and strip replacement in same interior fittings

If you're doing it to save power, look at the type of LED lights you replace them with. Many are packed full of resistors, and run quite hot... In a mates caravan, he ended up getting new flouro tubes, as they used less power than the LED strips he was going to fit in the housing.. I have interior l...

Re: Draining oil with an oil cooler fitted

Just change as you normally would - you'll have some dirty oil in there no matter what you do, and it'll be very quickly diluted by the new. Next oil change will still have a bit of dirty anyway

Re: Are these any good ?

I don't know about his distributors, but I'm always wary of them if not genuine VW. I brought an old VW one and fixed it up. I do, however, have one of his cheap electronic ignition units in my Beetle. When I fitted it, the spark was so much stronger that I developed a missfire, because the spark wa...

Re: Fitting T3 PAS to a Subaru engine?

I used the Subaru pump, and the VW line that has the baffles in. A Hydraulic shop (does diggers and stuff) made up the adapters/hoses to fit it all in. Then what I did, was fill the system... and hadn't tightened the join half way up the van, to my dirt floor in the barn is a LOT less dusty :ok I al...

I'll never forget that night in Wensleydale when Disco Dave & Kate's poptop closed on them during the night .... we woke up to be told it had been VERY windy overnight  Same as the great Blue Hills hurricane of last year ?? :pimp So you pushed your van back onto it's wheels, and off you ...

Re: Fuel economy

my employer recently cut everyones mileage allowance to a ridiculous 20p a mile What? Mine is the NZ$ equilvalent of about 60p a mile if I get a callout. Thats based on the average running cost of a vehicle here in NZ. If they tried to pull that one on us, I'd tell them they can give me a pool car ...

Is there power at the coil with the engine cranking? The ignition switches are utter crap - I ALWAYS have a spare.

Re: syncro camper for sale in nz

Just thinking about looking at this one. I wish I had brought mine with me when I moved out here. Getting the chills just thinking about importing spares though! There's a guy in Auckland who brings in spares and vans by the container load! He just left my place a few hours ago after dropping off s...

What do I need to change?
The gearknob :ok

for the diagram in case you forget where first is(n't). That's all, it will work just fine with a 5 speed lever setup and a little adjustment (just done mine and I prefer the 4 speed now!).

Same same.

Re: rear vents

Understand your doubt whether they are a carry-over from air-cooled days, however, look at the South African model that was completely redesign before starting production in 1991. The rear air vents were part of that redesign and remained in place. Volkswagen evidently consider them necessary on wa...

Re: Painting Mefro wheels

A really good DIY paint is Hammerite Smooth - it takes a while to go proper hard, but once it's set, it's hard! I used the silver version, but they do a black. There's no reason to do anything other than the front faces, but more paint will be better for corrosion protection, especially it you drive...
