Lower ball joint - 2 sizes avaiable
Unfortunately I got the wrong size. Purchased Meyle HD upper and lower joints for 1981 2.0 air cooled from VW Heritage. Garage put top one in no problem. Meyle only list one lower joint at http://www.meyle.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; They tried without success to get...

Re: quality parts manufacturers
just purchased upper and lower ball joints from VW Heritage - Meyle HD brand.
Thought long and hard about cheap stuff etc but went mid range - esp when the Meyle HD stuff comes with a 4 YEAR guarantee (apparently but time will tell). Will update after some use (if I remember).

Re: D-pillar air vents/rain collectors
I put a magnetic strip (coloured) on each side to track the water from the end of the gutter past the air intake opening. Stays in place yet easily moved for cleaning etc. Plenty of it on ebay.

Re: Fuel
Definitely fine. I have a copy somewhere from VW listing all engines going way back which run on unleaded.
VW kindly printed me a copy when I was buying my 2.0l a/c CU which has been OK for the last 15 years anyway.

Re: Carpet lining my van
did my van with veltrim about 4 years ago now. It was burgandy vt119. It has totally discoloured to brown anywhere not totally in the shade. The high temp glue has held well though. It came from ebay - one of the regular advertisers but cannot remember exactly which one. Maybe consider this when cho...

Re: Hydrocarbons too high for mot!
Maybe open the scews out a 1/4 turn at a time until it will idle. Alow 15-20 secs after each adjustment for the adjustment to take effect. Or possibly keep the old ratio of 3.5:3 turns - ie change to 2.5 and 2 turns. Too far will mean unburnt fuel. Difficult without being on the analyser - a friendl...

Re: Hydrocarbons too high for mot!
Try adjusting the volume mixture screw on both carbs as per Haynes. Screw fully in then, 2.5 turns out. I watched the VW guys do this years ago during the MOT and still do it before (most) MOT's. See top picture in the following link for the screw: http://www.ratwell.com/technical/DualCarbs.html Hop...

These look OK on ebay - item number 370524588038 They are GKN (Spidan not loebro, not sure of the difference?). I bought 2 at £12.95 each plus postage (now £18.95, some at 19.95). They are in the GKN box and look OK - going to fit one this weekend so hopefully they will fit etc. Its up to you - I am...

Re: caliper probs.
Try squirting brake fluid, rather than plus gas etc, behind the seal. Not a permanent fix but does last for ages - until the next time the van is not used for a few weeks. An MoT man told me this years ago (this is on a 1981 2.0 a/c). I use wrecking bar to move the pistons back after each press on th...
