Vacuum advance & retard
Hello there, Would anybody be able to explain which vacuum pipes go where on an injected 2.1DJ. I pulled them off for an engine rebuild and cannot remember which way to put them back 00ps! I have a pipe from the throttle valve, a pipe from the plenum chamber to connect via a 't' piece to the vac adv...

Re: 2.1DJ starting/running problems
Ok, thanks for that, I have never meddled with fuel injected engines before, just old minis in my youth. So I take it I cant get the valve seats replaced on these engines? If not seems like at least one head is junk the other possibly on its way out so im in the market for heads ........ouch!

Re: 2.1DJ starting/running problems
Hello It's been sometime since my last post so I hope someone is still watching this string. I finally got the engine out and have now removed both the heads. As I suspected the cylinder with no compression has a cracked exhaust valve and the valve has impacted into the head almost 5mm!! No wonder I...

Re: 2.1DJ starting/running problems
Thats right the push rod is solid between the lifter and the rocker arm. As far as I can see the rod is sitting correctly and I have loosened the rocker assembly to get some clearance to jiggle the rod around but still cant get any additional clearance. It is wierd and from reading the US site it wo...

Re: 2.1DJ starting/running problems
Thanks for the info. I re-checked the clearances and pushrods and they are all seated in the lifters. I reset the gaps but am still getting the rocker binding on the valve cap even with the adjuster backed off. Its like the lifter is too pumped up or something. I might try replacing the lifter on th...

Re: 2.1DJ starting/running problems
Well, checked the valve clearances today and it didnt make any difference. I did struggle to get the exhausts rockers to rock when the adjuster screw was backed off, is it usual for them to be tight? There were signs of damage to the top of no 4 valve spring cap as if the adjuster had been backed of...

Re: 2.1DJ starting/running problems
Ok, Compression test now complete and showing 7,7,9,1. Almost no compression in one cylinder and stranger still no blow out of the breathers and strange intermittent running as runs smoother at speed, so this is pointing towards valves right? Any ideas on what this might be, sticky/burnt valve, valv...

Re: Re-spray disappointment
Has anybody tried body solder? We used to solder the seams on minis and even the bottoms of the door skins when they develop pin holes. Ok if you could get to both sides, rust held off for years as long as the areas were cleaned back to shiney metal.

Re: 2.1DJ starting/running problems
Hello there, The good news is that the engine is running again. New set of plugs and leads and disconnected the two plugs on idle controll unit and plugged them together. Just fixed a coolant leak and cleaned the earth strap. Cranking is still slow and laboured. maybe the pinion bearing? It still ru...

Re: 2.1DJ starting/running problems
Hi there, thanks for the info,. I have just changed the plugs but as the engine never got off the 'choke' the last time I got it going, they were all black or maybe this is how they always were? Three of the plugs were dry and sooty and one had a more satin appearance and stank of fuel, I am wonderi...

Thanks for the tips, strangely enough I have just ordered some leads, plugs and fuel filter earlier today, seemed to be the next logical thing without busting the bank. Didnt check the strap oo...
