Re: Advice on engine gearbox upgrade for a 16"
That must've been a bit of a shock for the driver and crew. Nah! Happens all the time. These Ruskies are as tough as old boots. In fact, in the marshes sinking is quite a slow event as the marsh is like a semi-frozen "slush-puppy" (frozen crushed ice drink?) for quite a way down and has a...

Re: Advice on engine gearbox upgrade for a 16"
For syncropaddy et al who expressed some interest in my daily driver at work: Thought you might be interested in recovery techniques when one of our MTLB (Armoured Personnel Carrier) broke through the ice cover yesterday while scouting access routes across frozen marshes. The attached pics show: 1. ...

Re: Advice on engine gearbox upgrade for a 16"
Send it to Speedy Cables in North Wales - tell them what tyre sizes and gear ratios you have gone from with the original speedo, what tyres and diffs you have changed to and they will do the rest. Good service - they did my Rover P6 V8 speedo when I went from Auto to 5-speed manual. Not particularl...

Re: Advice on engine gearbox upgrade for a 16"
I`m running a 16 inch DOKA which had 6.16 and a 1z in it when I bought it. On 6.16 yep its was great off road - on the road you went into a coma going any distance and were thrashing the nuts of it doiung 50+. I spent hours looking at solutions with Aidan - and I checked around the numbers that mos...

Re: When should the radiator fan come on?
1st fuse in the box nearest the door 30 amp green usually Yes - the previous owner had replaced mine with a 15Amp I think - at the time I decided to check them all, as I was putting an upgraded lighting kit in, surprising number were the wrong size - too big and too small! Reminds me I'll have to p...

Re: Advice on engine gearbox upgrade for a 16"
Hi Syncropaddy, I am working as a oil company client representative on a Russian oil exploration crew. We live on the crew in the field to oversee their operations and to ensure the contractor fullfils contractual obligations regards data quality and safety. The data quality is not too burdensome, b...

Re: When should the radiator fan come on?
Hi, something really simple but you may not have tried - check the fuse! I forget which one it is but someone had put a too small fuse in my bus and it was blown - didn't notice for a year of owning it till a hot day on the peripherique round Paris - very bad news.
Cheers.

Re: Advice on engine gearbox upgrade for a 16"
It looks like this thread has run its course and all that needed to be said has been said. I would like to thank all who participated for their generosity. I really appreciate the education in the black arts of gear ratios, final drives and rolling radii and their effects on the cruising speed of th...

Re: Advice on engine gearbox upgrade for a 16"
Hi Will you be doing the work your self? Hi Footstuck No I won't be doing this myself - its far too important a job for that. One of the benefits of age and experience is that you learn when to quit and let your betters get on with their job. Better for me to work a bit extra and pay for an expert....

Re: Advice on engine gearbox upgrade for a 16"
full aspect ratio tyres have a ratio of between 80 and 85%, I believe 185R14C equates to 83%, that's what Baxter put on his original tyre calculator and what I use on my gear ratio programme and it seems to be pretty accurate, probably with larger diameter rims and wider profiles it will be 80% or ...

Re: Advice on engine gearbox upgrade for a 16"
From what you want 90kph in a heavy syncro i think 5.43 would be best with a 0.70 4th gear, will still give good speed without over revving. a 4.86 with a 0.7 would make it not nice yot drive aroung your speed of 90 kph but would be better at higher speeds. MTDI is way to go, its only disadvantage ...

Re: Advice on engine gearbox upgrade for a 16"
I would look at fitting different wheels/tyre sizes. The only trouble with this is the massive can of worms you open once trying to fit oversize tyres. (snip) Can anyone with a 16" give some definitive figures? (as im just guessing here) Anyway, it all mounts up to suspension mods, arch mods, ...

Re: Advice on engine gearbox upgrade for a 16"
If you are set on changing the diff, I would go for the 5.43 but dont forget you have to change the front one as well. With standard gears and 205/80/16 tyres at 3350 rpm you will be cruising at 110 km/h or there abouts. Hello again, Thanks for the figures. I would like to know what program you are...

Re: Advice on engine gearbox upgrade for a 16"
An AAZ is nothing like a TDI and never will or can be. Wot you are looking for in an engine is torque. Ideal rev range for TDI at cruising speed [ 100 to 120 km/h] is 3000 to 3200 rpm. No more. You can go less {not much though} but this will depend on the weight of your van and drag on it { high to...
