I had the VW versions of these on my old van and 82. I liked them

Re: 1.9 dg water pump noise
This thread made me go out and check mine. It wobbles slightly so what I thought was a slipping belt is the pump. Getting it and a cv joint done on Saturday. Glad I caught it before it started pissing water

Re: dead Van?
It's a DG so no ECU. Start with buying a multimeter, you will know in seconds whether the battery is flat and it's voltage and the voltage at the alternator. I had a seized engine but is sounded terrible before it seized so I think it's very unlikely. Perhaps stick up a post on general chat to see i...

Any chance of a pic. Just been looking a those Waeco fridges but can''t justify the cost as I'll be selling this year. Be interesting to see how you've done it

Re: Fitting a new thermostat
What make you think the thermostat is broken?
Squirt some plus gas or similar penetrating fluid on the bolts and leave overnight. Make sure the thermostat is put in the right way round. Should be an easy job, fingers crossed. Afterwards follow the correct bleeding routine.

Re: New starter still giving problems
Wouldn't one of those old Snap-on remote starters work? Not that I'd fancy starting an auto remotely

Re: New starter still giving problems
I fitted an extra earth strap to the gearbox but I've never had one in the engine bay, Where on the engine would it have been attached

Re: Leaking automatic box
All I got back was a plastic bag of bits, so I don't know what was what. My local garage did rebuild it but it took a few goes (to put right the previous garage's mistakes)which logistically would be a nightmare from Yorkshire. Someone possibly Cobra88 on here rebuilt their own box and would have be...

Re: Leaking automatic box
Where are you mate? It might not be so bad if the box isn't on the van yet. Trawl the Vanagon Forums in the US, autos are common there and I remember there being some good dos and don'ts on changing that seal.

Re: Leaking automatic box
Sounds like the 2nd gear brake band piston cover seal. If it's not a big leak just live with it. I have seen some US owners have done it but it's very easy to let every thing slip. I took mine to Harry Harpics in Southend to fix the same leak and they completely messed it up leading to a full rebuil...

Re: Whining automatic gearbox
I don't have enough knowledge really, I'd be sorely tempted to drive it if it's just the whine but maybe others on here will know better. All these transmissions will have the seals hardening and need work soon. Mine is working well now but it did take a few goes to put it right. The local specialis...

Re: Whining automatic gearbox
Hi was your ATF dark brown or even black? Often that's a clear sign that it's being burnt. It will often have a burnt smell. I believe that letting the final drive run too low can cause a whine but it doesn't necessarily mean the box is toast. Are there any other problems: Does the van feel as if a ...

Re: JP Exhaust vs VW Speedshop
Another vote for Speedshop. Great note. Bashed mine up and got a Longlife instead but it's much more raucous than the Speedshop
