Hi, I did as you suggested and haven't noticed the noise since, but then again the noise didn't appear until well into a journey. I took the wheel off to check for any movement in the hub and calliper but there's nothing untoward. Occasionall the calliper does bind a little and creates heat build-up...

The problem I've recently experienced is a hot smell from the front off-side brake calliper...binding. Upon inspection the pads are low, and look ready for changing. The callipers are Girling, is changing the pads a straight fwd job? Also, my theory for the binding is the piston travel, i.e. its rea...

Believe me, these transfers have been on since 1987, and were well and truely baked on. Was a relatively cheap fix in the end anyway.

In the end I used petrol. After liberally applying with a cloth the residue quickly softens and can be easily scraped away. I trashed my Sainsburys nectar card in the process however ha ha. After that I applyed t-cut and then washed and waxed the area...barely any witness of the old transfes...job d...

Hi, yeah I used my wifes hairdryer (special permission was granted!), didn't think about wd40 to be honest. I'll give it a go.

Have spent about 4hrs peeling off the original, but badly faded, set of 'kamper' side stripes on my autohomes kamper. What is left is a sticky residue. Any tips for removing this? Have thought about white spirit, thinners, even petrol, but before I try all three has anyone any better suggestions...a...

I found a new belt and hey presto the noise vanished! Just a tad hint of a squeal upon cold start up, but after a few mins and gentle revving nothing like I had before changing the belt.

Just need an mot now!!

Just fitted a new regulator in an attempt to give my alternator a new lease of life, but now I'm pretty certain the pulley end bearing is shot. The intermittent squeal is almost unbearable. Could someone point me towards a supplier please? Thanks

PS - It's the type fitted to MK1 Golfs & Polos.

Thanks California Dreamin, I got a new regulator within 24hrs, fitted it last night and battery light went out!! Unfortunately the battery gave out it's last puff so is on charge at present. I've got an annoying squealing noise now. Don't think it's down to belt tension, maybe the alternator pulley ...

The part number for the regulator on my unit (a Bosch 0120 489 440) is 197 311 005. Apart from JK (who want £22.50 + postage for one) does anyone know where else I can source the same part cheaper? Thanks

Looks like I'm going to source a replacement alternator and be done with. Now the question is what is the main difference between a 45a unit as fitted to mine versus a 65a unit as fitted to some variants? Can I switch to a 65a unit without harming anything?
